This is the filmmaker who cut his teeth on <em>The Simpsons<\/em> in its prime, and went on to helm <em>The Iron Giant<\/em>, <em>The Incredibles<\/em> and its sequel, and <em>Ratatouille<\/em>. And running through the background of it all, he\u2019s always wanted to make <em>Ray Gunn<\/em> \u2013 a retro-sci-fi noir which he\u2019s been stewing on since the 1990s. Now, it\u2019s finally real, arriving as an animated feature on Netflix later this year, with some stellar voice talent to boot.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"content_content__i0P3p\" data-test=\"content\"><\/p>\n<p>In the role of the brilliantly-named Ray Gunn himself is Sam Rockwell. \u201cHe\u2019s pretty much your Main Street private detective,\u201d Bird tells <em>Empire<\/em> of his hero. \u201cA hard-bitten character, but not without a sense of humour.\u201d And getting someone as expressive as Rockwell in the booth only adds to the personality of your hero. \u201cSam is just an amazing actor, and he\u2019s quirky and unpredictable,\u201d says Bird. \u201cHe never phones it in. It inspires you to bring something to the table as an animator.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"content_content__i0P3p\" data-test=\"content\"><\/p>\n<p>As Gunn \u2013 the last human private detective in a world inhabited by all kinds of galactic beings \u2013 becomes embroiled in a twisty-turny mystery, Bird promises audiences are in for a ride. \u201cIt has no shortage of thoughts in it.
