When David Fincher and Aaron Sorkin dramatised the rise of Facebook, they did so as a Greek tragedy that juxtaposed Mark Zuckerberg\u2019s rise to tech-bro dominance against his personal and business relationships crumbling \u2013 a portrait of a man who was already changing the nature of friendship in the digital age. These days, the Facebook story has shifted even further, with its reshaping of everyday life \u2013 as outlined by the Wall Street Journal\u2019s 2021 report, \u2018The Facebook Files\u2019, blowing the whistle on how the platform negatively affected mental health in users, stirred political discord, among other darker things.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"content_content__i0P3p\" data-test=\"content\"><\/p>\n<p>And so, Sorkin has returned \u2013 as writer, and also director this time \u2013 for a \u201ccompanion piece\u201d film titled <em>The Social Reckoning<\/em>, dramatising the story behind the <em>WSJ<\/em> piece, this time starring Jeremy Strong as an older Mark Zuckerberg, Mikey Madison as whistleblower Frances Haugen, and Jeremy Allen White as reporter Jeff Horwitz. Watch the trailer here:<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"content_content__i0P3p\" data-test=\"content\"><\/p>\n<p>This looks like another potent and searing cinematic take on the Facebook story \u2013 with all the scripted intensity you\u2019d expect from Aaron Sorkin. And he\u2019s assembled a stellar cast for this one, also featuring hte likes of Wunmi Mosaku, Betty Gilpin, Billy Magnussen, and Bill Burr. While it\u2019s yet to be confirmed whether Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross will return on soundtrack duties, there\u2019s a little reprise of their legendary <em>Social Network<\/em> score in the final stretch of the trailer here.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"content_content__i0P3p\" data-test=\"content\"><\/p>\n<p>It remains to be seen whether <em>The Social Reckoning<\/em> will be just as vital a piece of cinema as its predecessor \u2013 we\u2019ll give it a \u2018like\u2019 (or a heart, or a thumbs-down) when it his cinemas on October 9.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A lot has happened since The Social Network.
