It’s happening… it’s really happening!” Yes, we are officially a year out from the release of Shrek 5 and our long, long awaited return to far, far away, and to mark the occasion DreamWorks Animation has just dropped its first proper teaser trailer for directors Walt Dohrn and Conrad Vernon’s upcoming animated fivequel. And as you’ll see below, things are looking a little fraught for Shrek, Fiona, Donkey, and family when we pick back up with them here:

Storybook opening? Check! Eddie Murphy busting his vocal cords as Donkey? Check! Shrek and Fiona’s not-so-kiddo kiddos Felicia (Zendaya), Fergus (Marcello Hernandez), and Farkle (Skyler Gisondo) in jail with their folks and Donkey? Er, check… Yes, by some twist of fate, it seems that when we rejoin our heroes here they’re not only heading back to far, far away, but straight into the slammer! Their crime? Who knows. Their journey? Peppered with Disney parodying, gruff-voiced alley snowmen (“Do you wanna date a snowman?”), a seeming run-back of Shrek 2‘s iconic K.N.I.G.H.T.S/COPS parody, and a returning Gingy, who is this time — and we quote — “caked up like a friggin’ bakery.” In case you were wondering whether DreamWorks had lost their edge in the years since 2010’s Shrek Forever After, the answer is an emphatic no (unless by ‘edge’ you mean the edges of the characters, in which case we can confirm that everyone has been yassified to within an inch of their life.)

We still don’t know exactly what Shrek 5 — first teased at the end of the exceptional Puss In Boots: The Last Wish — has in store for us just yet, or even the precise date it will hit cinemas. But with Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, and Eddie Murphy back in the saddle, a wealth of new talent on board, and this trailer alone already teasing an animated caper with a serrated edge to its fairytale fantasia, we’re ready to head back to the swamp.
