In 14th-century Florence, Dante (also Isaac) grapples with the creation of his greatest work.<\/p>\n<div>\n<hr class=\"preferredSourceCTA_divider__FIEES\" \/><span class=\"content_content__i0P3p\" data-test=\"content\"><\/p>\n<p>This is a bizarre misfire from director Julian Schnabel. His&nbsp;previous&nbsp;work \u2014 locked-in-syndrome POV drama&nbsp;<em>The Diving Bell&nbsp;And&nbsp;The&nbsp;Butterfly<\/em>; Vincent&nbsp;van Gogh biopic&nbsp;<em>At Eternity\u2019s Gate<\/em>&nbsp;\u2014 achieved something far more profound. <em>In The Hand&nbsp;Of&nbsp;Dante<\/em>, meanwhile, is&nbsp;almost impressively&nbsp;pretentious and misjudged at&nbsp;almost every&nbsp;turn.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"inlineImage_image-container__aklxu block-item\" data-test=\"inline-image-container\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"In The Hand Of Dante\" loading=\"lazy\" data-nimg=\"fill\" src=\"https:\/\/imdbnews.ir\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/in-the-hand-of-dante.jpg\" \/><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"content_content__i0P3p\" data-test=\"content\"><\/p>\n<p>Set across twin timelines, it sees Oscar Isaac play both 14-century poet Dante Alighieri, of&nbsp;\u2018Divine Comedy\u2019&nbsp;fame, and real-life&nbsp;New&nbsp;York&nbsp;\u201cliterary iconoclast\u201d Nick Tosches. (The&nbsp;modern-day&nbsp;side is shot in crisp black-and-white, while the flashbacks are in&nbsp;<em>Horrible Histories<\/em>&nbsp;colour.) The film adapts Tosches\u2019 2002 sprawling, ambitious book of the same name, which included Tosches himself as a semifictional protagonist.&nbsp;In the modern day, Tosches accepts a job from an old friend, to steal a rare copy of Dante\u2019s&nbsp;\u2018The Divine Comedy\u2019, bringing him into orbit with the&nbsp;Mafia; in the 1300s, Dante wrestles with his spiritual and artistic practice, via unintentionally comic levels of pomposity.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"pullQuote_pullquote__ynq1g\" data-test=\"pullquote\">\n<div class=\"pullQuote_pullquote__content__gRuai\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>Schnabel\u2019s tone and approach is both overly self-important and fatally confused about whatever it is trying to say.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"content_content__i0P3p\" data-test=\"content\"><\/p>\n<p>Taking a&nbsp;<em>Cloud Atlas<\/em>&nbsp;approach to casting, we see several actors take on dual roles in both timelines, including Gal Gadot, Louis Cancelmi and Gerard Butler, the last&nbsp;as both a&nbsp;nastily murderous&nbsp;Mob enforcer&nbsp;<em>and<\/em>&nbsp;the Pope. Also, Martin Scorsese pops by with a massive beard for a confusing cameo as Dante\u2019s mentor.&nbsp;It\u2019s&nbsp;not&nbsp;nearly as&nbsp;fun as any of&nbsp;that sounds. Everyone is dreadfully miscast,&nbsp;almost entirely&nbsp;across the board, while Schnabel\u2019s tone and approach is both overly self-important and fatally confused about whatever it is trying to say.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"content_content__i0P3p\" data-test=\"content\"><\/p>\n<p>The intention, perhaps, was&nbsp;to make something on a par with epic Renaissance-era poetry \u2014 a pompous, metafictional piece of art, about art \u2014 but while occasionally pretty, it is&nbsp;mainly just&nbsp;overlong and boring. \u201cMy books can\u2019t be edited any more than a leopard can be manicured,\u201d insists Nick at the beginning of the film;&nbsp;perhaps Schnabel&nbsp;should have considered editing this&nbsp;two-and-a-half hour&nbsp;folly into something even remotely watchable.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<p>Kind of a disaster.
