His <em>Evil Dead<\/em> movies are full of mischievous jolts, as is spiritual follow-up <em>Drag Me To Hell<\/em>. Even his <em>Spider-Man<\/em> movies often see him dip back into the horror well. And this year\u2019s <em>Send Help<\/em> saw Raimi return to the genre for the first time in 17 years, telling the story of two co-workers \u2013 Dylan O\u2019Brien\u2019s douchebag CEO Bradley Preston, and Rachel McAdams\u2019 downtrodden employee Linda Liddle \u2013 stranded on a desert island together, vying for power. For all its thrills and spills \u2013 of vomit, blood, and other goops \u2013 it is a largely grounded horror tale, without any supernatural elements.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"content_content__i0P3p\" data-test=\"content\"><\/p>\n<p>But, one dream sequence sees Raimi indulge his inner Deadite, as a guilt-ridden Linda is spooked by a zombified body \u2013 of Zuri, Bradley\u2019s girlfriend who Linda has (<strong>SPOILER ALERT!<\/strong>) brutally dispatched \u2013 on the beach. It\u2019s a giddily fun little fright, and the director simply couldn\u2019t help himself from \u2013 in cinematic terms \u2013 shouting \u201cboo!\u201d at the audience. \u201cWe wanted to scare those kids,\u201d he tells <em>Empire<\/em>. \u201cThey deserve it! That seems to get them, that one.\u201d It\u2019s not just that Zuri\u2019s demonic corpse pops up on screen \u2013 Raimi even pushes it screaming towards the lens, in a move that doesn\u2019t make logical sense, but is a brilliantly fun flourish. \u201cAt that point it\u2019s a dream, so why not have the monster turn to the audience?\u201d he asks. \u201cIt\u2019s kind of hokey, but it was a lot of fun to shoot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"content_content__i0P3p\" data-test=\"content\"><\/p>\n<p>As daft as the scare is, it reveals the monstrousness hiding in Linda \u2013 and previous drafts of <em>Send Help<\/em> had an even bigger twist involving McAdams\u2019 not-really-a-hero. \u201cOriginally, we revealed that Linda is the one that brought down the plane,\u201d co-writer Mark Swift tells <em>Empire<\/em>, revealing that there was once a third-act flashback sequence that would have shown Linda orchestrating the crash. \u201cSam loved it, everyone loved it, and we had a very hard time getting that made because it was dark.\u201d Either way, don\u2019t mess with Linda Liddle.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"inlineImage_image-container__aklxu block-item\" data-test=\"inline-image-container\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Empire \u2013 August 2026 \u2013 The Odyssey cover \u2013 Anne Hathaway\" loading=\"lazy\" data-nimg=\"fill\" src=\"https:\/\/imdbnews.ir\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/sam-raimi-on-send-helps-most-evil-dead-style-jump-scare-we-wanted-to-scare-those-kids.jpg\" \/><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"content_content__i0P3p\" data-test=\"content\"><\/p>\n<p>Read <em>Empire<\/em>\u2019s full <em>Send Help<\/em> interview with Sam Raimi and writers Damian Shannon and Mark Swift in The Odyssey issue, on sale Thursday June 2.
