In recent years, Jane Schoenbrun has emerged as one of the most exciting voices in cinema, with 2021\u2019s We\u2019re All Going To The World\u2019s Fair<\/em> and 2024\u2019s I Saw The TV Glow<\/em> earning them major critical acclaim and a cult following. Now, Schoenbrun is back with their third feature, the brilliantly-titled Teenage Sex And Death At Camp Miasma<\/em>, this time leaning even further into the horror genre with a meta-textual tale of slasher movies, moviemaking, and\u2026 well, sex and death.<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

The film stars Hacks<\/em>\u2019 Hannah Einbinder as Kris, a director hired to reboot the long-in-tooth \u2018Camp Miasma\u2019 slasher franchise. And when Kris connects with Gillian Anderson\u2019s actor Billy Presley, the Final Girl of the original \u2018Camp Miasma\u2019 movie, things get seriously twisted. As Schoenbrun tells Empire<\/em>, it\u2019s another deeply personal work. \u201cI remember feeling when we wrapped, \u2018Oh my God, that was the first film that represents all of me,\u201d they explain.<\/p>\n

The horror genre continues to be a resonant one for exploring the queer themes embedded in Schoenbrun\u2019s work, with the director noting the \u201cgender fuckery\u201d found in many genre classics. \u201cNorman Bates dressed up in his mother\u2019s clothes, or Buffalo Bill in his skin suit, tucking his penis back and doing his freaky dance \u2014 even the movies where there isn\u2019t an explicit transsexual menace, you still get the impression that a Michael Myers or a Leatherface is dealing with all kinds of fucked-up Freudian shit that has something to do with sex and gender deviance.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

But the main required viewing for the Camp Miasma<\/em> team was Crystal Lake Memories<\/em> \u2013 a near-seven-hour documentary on the making of Friday The 13th<\/em>, which Schoenbrun screened for their cast and crew. \u201cTo me it\u2019s better than Best In Show<\/em> in [that] it\u2019s a perfect mockumentary, except it\u2019s real,\u201d Scheonbrugn says. Bring on the sex and death.<\/p>\n
