There\u2019s a lot of pressure that comes with making a movie. Millions of dollars riding on it, hundreds of cast and crew involved. And, as any actor will tell you, during the making of a film, there\u2019s no real way of knowing how it\u2019s going to turn out. It\u2019s a lot of pressure \u2013 and gut feelings can be strong. Speaking to Empire<\/em>, Josh Brolin shared that he had a major moment of doubt after his first day on the set of Ridley Scott\u2019s The Dog Stars<\/em> \u2013 an apocalyptic drama depicting the aftermath of a deadly flu virus \u2013 in which he stars opposite Jacob Elordi as gun-toting neighbour Bruce Bangley.<\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n Arriving to set after a string of other back-to-back movie productions \u2013 including Weapons<\/em>, Wake Up Dead Man<\/em>, and The Running Man<\/em> \u2013 Brolin landed in Italy for a rehearsal session with Scott (who he\u2019d previously worked with on American Gangster<\/em>) and Elordi. But once there, he felt his fight-or-flight kick in. \u201cRidley was talking a lot of stories and not really rehearsing,\u201d Brolin explains, \u201cand it bugged me out, and I got really scared. I went back, called my agent and said, \u2018I want out. Something\u2019s really wrong, and I\u2019ve got to get the fuck out of here.\u2019 Luckily my agent is a close friend and he said, \u2018Rest for a day.\u2019 I was like, \u2018No, man, I know what the fuck you\u2019re doing. It\u2019s not one of those day-things.\u2019 And I was right.\u201d<\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n With some hindsight, he attributes his reaction to Scott\u2019s unconventional filmmaking process. These days, the great director is light on rehearsal, preferring to keep the immediately energy of a scene, and famously shoots multiple-camera set-ups to ensure brisk production. It was a process that took Brolin some adjusting to. \u201c[Ridley] goes, \u2018Come here,\u2019 and he brought me into his trailer, and played the scene we had just finished,\u201d says Brolin. \u201cIt was a really good, very dynamic scene between me and Jacob, and he goes, \u2018Okay?\u2019 I go, \u2018Okay,\u2019 and then I started to feed off that.\u201d<\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n Brolin is thankful he stayed \u2013 getting into the unique Ridley Scott rhythm as filming progressed. \u201cIt took about a day or two for me to really embrace that, and then I got super into it because it was stratospherically creative and stratospherically dangerous,\u201d he says. \u201cIt was like, \u2018This is what I\u2019ve been asking for but now I\u2019m getting it, I\u2019m fighting it, because there\u2019s zero comfort in it.\u2019 It became one of the more creative, satisfying projects that I\u2019ve ever been involved with.\u201d The risk paid off \u2013 and, simply put, nobody does it like Ridley Scott.<\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Read Empire<\/em>\u2019s full The Dog Stars<\/em> feature \u2013 speaking to Ridley Scott, Jacob Elordi, Josh Brolin and Margaret Qualley on making a different kind of apocalypse movie \u2013 in The Odyssey issue, on sale Thursday July 2.
