It\u2019s been a few years since Taika Waititi delivered his last film \u2013 an adaptation of beloved football doc Next Goal Wins<\/em>. But now, three years later, he\u2019s finally back with Klara And The Sun<\/em>, taking Kazuo Ishiguro\u2019s acclaimed novel \u2013 about a robot girl, Klara, who befriends sick kid Josie in a dystopian future \u2013 and bringing it to life with Jenna Ortega in the title role, and Amy Adams, Steve Buscemi and more among its ensemble. Oh, and Rachel House too \u2013 this is<\/em> a Taika Waititi movie.<\/p>\n

Except, it looks set to be a different kind of Taika movie, stripping back some of the comedic instincts the Kiwi filmmaker became known for. \u201cTo try and make this a silly movie undermined a lot of what Klara<\/em> is about,\u201d he tells Empire<\/em>. \u201cThis story\u2019s a drama. Once I realised that, it made it a lot easier.\u201d In a key difference to Thor: Love And Thunder<\/em>, there are, he confirms: \u201cNo screaming goats!\u201d<\/p>\n

Waititi read the entire novel on a flight in one sitting. \u201cWhich never happens!\u201d he says. \u201cI absorbed it really fast. I just found it so beautiful.\u201d And unlike his comic book movies, this one\u2019s not so much packed with incident. \u201cThere\u2019s no big twist where robots start murdering everyone. I say this as a compliment: it\u2019s a story where nothing really happens,\u201d he explains. \u201cIt all just sort of flows.\u201d<\/p>\n

All signs point to a quieter, more human movie than we\u2019ve seen from Waititi in a while. \u201cHumans are quite challenging to love,\u201d he expands. \u201cIf you weren\u2019t human and you were introduced to us, you might ask: what is it about these things that are supposedly lovable? Why would you love one of them? How come they keep falling in love with each other? We\u2019re weird and unlikeable. We\u2019re erratic and unreasonable and unpredictable.\u201d Welcome back, Taika.<\/p>\n
