Naturally, after a sequel short in Volume 3 titled ‘Child Of Hope’, it wasn’t entirely surprising that there was a full series to follow. Created by Kenji Kamiyama (The Lord Of The Rings: The War Of The Rohirrim), with animation by Production I.G (best known for Ghost In The Shell and the animated sequence in Kill Bill) and episode direction from Shunsuke Tada, The Ninth Jedi is given the room to expand, which it always felt it needed.

In this ‘non-canon’ setting, the Jedi and the Sith are both largely figments of the past, save for a few notable exceptions, while lightsabers are rare, as the ability to make them has all but passed from memory. The protagonist, Lah Kara (voiced by Kimiko Glenn in the English dub), hopes to rescue her father, Lah Zhima (Simu Liu), from abduction by the ambitious warlord Nawaam (Young Mazino). Like the original films, we’re dropped into the middle of the ongoing story, and, like A New Hope, it opens in the midst of a chase. The comparisons continue to stack up as The Ninth Jedi orbits, but never fully emulates, the familiar hallmarks of Star Wars stories: paternal drama, a masked enemy, rebellion against an authoritarian conqueror, and so on.

It can be disappointing when the series hems too closely to what one would expect from a Star Wars story: the soundtrack, from Nobuko Toda and Kazuma Jinnouchi, sadly a forgettable imitation of Williams, is one culprit. Another is that the grand threat is yet another variation on the Death Star. But Kamiyama at least adds a little twist to these story beats, tackling them with the kind of fresh perspective which has made Visions such a success.

The Ninth Jedi is interested in leveraging these familiar hallmarks of Star Wars to ask some new questions of it, particularly around the dichotomy of the Jedi and Sith, with a cast whose actions are continually called into question, in part through lightsabers which “reflect the colour of their heart”.

Nawaam in particular hopes to cast the classical ideas of Jedi and Sith into irrelevance — and to prove his point, he aspires to a sort of cold, neutral emotionlessness, rather than the emotional volatility of the Sith. It makes for an interesting approach to these ancient enemies, even if the series doesn’t always have the time to totally unpack it. On Kara’s side, it’s fun to see the requirements of what makes a Jedi slacken a little: to her and her companions, the ideal is more important than the birthright.

Sometimes cleaving a little too close to what’s expected of Star Wars, The Ninth Jedi is at its best when it keeps its recollections of the films to a relative minimum, echoing them in brief before spinning these familiar hallmarks into something new and exciting.

The young Jedi apprentice Lah Kara (Kimiko Glenn) seeks to restore the defunct Jedi Order and rescue her father and master Lah Zhiwa (Simu Liu), a lightsaber craftsman abducted by the warlord Nawaam (Young Mazino).
