His reveal at Combo Breaker 2026 set off an avalanche of memes and speculation, leaving fans equal parts hopeful and terrified that he’ll be just as strong in the game as he is in the Baki manga.

We got the chance to speak with Tekken series chief producer, Naoya Yasuda, who answered our burning questions about ‘The Ogre’ and how the developers will adapt the famously overpowered fighter to fit within Tekken 8’s framework. We also asked what inspired this collaboration in the first place, and if Yasuda had seen the memes about Yujiro’s inclusion in the game. (Spoiler alert: Yes, he has, and he loves them.)

We also chatted with Yuki Yokoi, director of promotions and a previous editor for the Baki manga, who spoke about the significance of Yujiro being a guest character in Tekken 8, Baki’s 35th anniversary, and his thoughts about fans’ reactions to this unexpected but welcome partnership between one of the most celebrated martial arts manga of all time and one of the most significant 3D fighting game franchises ever created.

IGN: Tekken is no stranger to adding oddball guest characters from other genres (The Walking Dead’s Negan comes to mind), but Yujiro is a whole other level of nutty. What gave you the idea to put him in the game?

Naoya Yasuda: Guest characters in the Tekken series have been the subject of endless discussion, both inside our development team and across the community. But the practical reality is that simply saying, “We want this character in Tekken,” doesn’t mean a partner company will give us the green light. A guest collaboration only comes together when a great many complicated factors — the timing for both brands, licensing, commercial terms and more — line up perfectly.

In that sense, the idea of bringing Yujiro Hanma over from the Baki series is not something that came up recently. It actually dates back to the Tekken 7 era, right around the time Baki was celebrating its 30th anniversary.

Tekken and Baki share a spiritual affinity that runs deep. There is the motif at the heart of both stories — a fated fight between father and son — along with a bold, uncompromising worldview, and above all the overwhelming character of Yujiro Hanma himself: the “Strongest Creature on Earth,” and the only man in the world who fights on raw physical strength alone. We have felt a powerful kinship with the series for a long time, and we always hoped that if the very best opportunity ever came along, we would make a collaboration happen.

This time, the timing of Baki reaching the major milestone of its 35th anniversary lined up beautifully with our own search for new guest character possibilities. An idea we had held onto for years, the histories of both IPs, and the passion of both fanbases and communities all intersected at once. Seen that way, choosing to collaborate with the Baki series and bring Yujiro Hanma down into our world was, in a sense, an entirely natural progression.

IGN: I previously spoke with Street Fighter 6 director Nakayama-san and producer Matsumoto-san, and they were curious to see how Tekken will handle powerscaling the game, given Yujiro is canonically the strongest man on earth in Baki lore. So, how do you intend to make it so that Yujiro can actually lose a fight or get beaten up?

Naoya Yasuda: Actually, Nakayama-san and Matsumoto-san at Capcom asked me this exact question in person! [Laughs] I have enormous respect for the Street Fighter 6 team personally, so I was glad it caught their interest.

The challenge underneath it all is very clear-cut. Tekken 8 is a competitive fighting game, so one side always loses — and naturally there will be times when the one losing is Yujiro Hanma. At the same time, we are well aware of the voices saying, “I don’t want to see Yujiro lose.” As a Baki fan myself, I felt exactly the same way! [Laughs]

How we resolve that contradiction and translate it into Tekken 8 is something we are working through right now, with development actively underway. Since we announced his participation at Combo Breaker 2026 in Chicago in late May, we have seen all kinds of theories and wishlists go up on social media. I think expectations are that much higher precisely because the Tekken Project has kept delivering guest characters at a high level — which certainly keeps us on our toes.

What we value most is delivering both things at once: the elements our competitive community and our most dedicated fighting game players are looking for, and an overwhelming “Yujiro Hanma experience” — the feeling, the instant you pick him up, that you are controlling the very Yujiro Hanma you read about in the manga. Neither one takes priority over the other.

We are in the thick of development, and Season 3 still has Bob arriving in August and Roger Jr. this autumn, so it will be a little longer before we can reveal much more. That said, the teaser trailer we showed at Combo Breaker 2026 does contain a few hints. Please rewatch it a few times, pick up the manga and revisit Yujiro Hanma’s history so far, and let your imagination run wild! [Laughs]

We are pursuing a presentation and a feel that hold to the rules and competitive integrity of a fighting game while still letting you sense, the moment you move him, that you are controlling Yujiro himself with your own hands. Fighting game fans should be able to enjoy him as a serious competitive tool, and Baki fans as the ultimate fantasy made real. I would love for Nakayama-san and Matsumoto-san to pick up a controller and see our answer for themselves!

IGN: Speaking of Street Fighter 6, there seems to be a trend right now in the fighting game space where developers are adding guest characters from other franchises — Tifa and Kenshiro come to mind. What do you make of this trend? Why are so many mainline fighting games doing this?

Naoya Yasuda: If you categorize DLC characters, they fall into three broad types: 1) Returning legacy characters, 2) Brand-new original characters, and 3) Guest characters.

Development cost and overall difficulty rise in exactly that order. Guest characters mean developing with an external rights holder’s IP on loan, which is never straightforward. That is why, for any title, it is physically difficult to do them often — every one is a genuinely precious opportunity.

But the payoff you get in return for that effort is one of a kind. For existing players, having a character enter from a completely different world creates a distinctive kind of excitement: “What kind of character are they going to be?” And for new players, there is the thrill of a long-held dream scenario becoming real: “What would it actually be like if I could control my favorite character myself?”

One defining trait of the fighting game genre is how close players and developers are to each other. That is exactly why both the people delivering something like this and the people receiving it can enjoy it together, as a single celebration. In that respect, I feel Yujiro Hanma is functioning extremely powerfully as a bridge connecting manga and anime fans with fighting game fans.

The fact that the fighting game industry as a whole is actively pursuing initiatives that draw in new fans from outside is giving people who have never touched a fighting game a clear and compelling reason to pick up an arcade stick or a controller and step into our community. I think this trend is emerging precisely because the genre as a whole is maturing to the point where it functions as a hub for pop culture.

As long as these are made with respect for other companies’ IPs and with deep love for the source material, I feel we are expanding the fighting game ecosystem itself as an industry — creating a wonderful virtuous cycle for developers, licensors, and above all for players.

IGN: Yujiro seems like a challenging character to translate into a game like Tekken. How far are you into development for him, and what’s been the biggest difficulty bringing him to life?

Naoya Yasuda: As I mentioned earlier, we still have plenty left to deliver on the Season 3 timeline. If I jump too far ahead and spill all the details on Yujiro Hanma right now, the marketing team will turn on me, and I will be in serious trouble! [Laughs]

We are still building him out carefully, element by element, with close supervision from Itagaki-sensei and Akita Shoten, so I hope you will understand that I can’t share many concrete specifics yet. Guest characters require a far longer development period than returning characters. It is true that development is entering the home stretch ahead of his release in early 2027, and as his level of polish rises day by day, my own urge to get this “Strongest Creature on Earth” into everyone’s hands only grows stronger.

On the technical side, translating the one-of-a-kind silhouette and sheer conviction of Keisuke Itagaki-sensei’s artwork into 3D graphics — and having our animators build, frame by frame and entirely by hand, the manga-style exaggeration that no live actor could ever reproduce — has without question made this a different kind of challenge for the project than anything we usually take on.

Realistically, we won’t be able to share the next round of Yujiro information until at least around the time you can hear Roger Jr.’s footsteps approaching this autumn. But the overwhelming sense of pressure Yujiro projects when he squares off against an opponent on screen is unquestionably shaping up to exceed fans’ expectations. Please look forward to it!

IGN: Of course, lots of fans are hoping to see moves from his iconic fights in the anime and manga within his Tekken moveset. How faithful to the source material do you plan to be, or will you take some liberties with this version of the character? (On that note, some players want him to be totally busted, in keeping with Baki lore. What do you make of those opinions?)

Naoya Yasuda: The Tekken series is known for giving each character a very large number of moves, and that concept doesn’t change much for Yujiro Hanma. So we are building his moves with the original manga as our base — not just the famous big techniques and the memorable scenes, but examining and studying it panel by panel. Essentially, every one of his moves can be traced back to the manga. Naturally, for elements that exist in Tekken but not in Baki — universal system mechanics and the like — we have to build our own interpretations, but we are being meticulous about never straying from the inspiration and the world of the source material.

As for his performance… I suspect this is a question I will keep being asked right up until release! [Laughs]

Look, if he’s too weak, fans of the manga and the anime will be disappointed; and if he’s too strong and breaks the game balance, the more dedicated players will lose interest. Finding the right landing point is genuinely difficult, but personally I have no intention of settling for anything half-hearted.

Recreating “a presence so overwhelming that just having him stand on screen makes you feel you can’t win,” protecting a healthy competitive experience as a fighting game, and striking the exact balance where anyone who moves him is convinced, “this really is the Strongest Creature on Earth” — that is the right answer for me as a producer, and it is the point we are aiming for.

But don’t worry. Even if you happen to lose while playing as Yujiro Hanma, that isn’t Yujiro Hanma’s defeat — you are simply the one who lost. Yujiro Hanma has not lost. So Yujiro Hanma remains the “Strongest Creature on Earth,” no matter what happens! [Laughs] Please look forward to it!

IGN: Baki is arguably the most popular martial arts manga right now (barring Kengan Ashura). If Yujiro is well-received, would the team ever consider making a Baki fighting game?

Naoya Yasuda: Hearing you say that makes me very happy as a fan! That said, looking at the nature of the Baki series and the way the industry has been developing lately, I think there is more of a dream in it for fans if Yujiro and the other compelling characters turn up across all sorts of fighting games — so that whichever fighting game a player opens, they can freely control a Baki character — than if we were to monopolize the IP. Maybe I feel that way all the more because I am a die-hard Baki fan myself! [Laughs]

We give everything we have, every day, to make the Tekken community bigger and more passionate, and we want to keep doing that. To that end, the lessons and technical insight we have gained through this Yujiro Hanma project have been substantial. How do you express the overwhelming physicality, the weight of every strike, and the intimidating presence that dominates the space in Keisuke Itagaki-sensei’s artwork as 3D action, and give players the overwhelming immersion of controlling a manga character themselves? That challenge has unquestionably pushed our development team’s creativity and technical ability to the next level.

First, though, our mission and our top priority is to bring this “Strongest Creature on Earth” into Tekken 8 — which we are pouring everything into right now — in the best possible form, one that fighting game fans and Baki fans around the world can be 100% satisfied with.

I sincerely hope this collaboration carves a new wave of excitement into the history of the Baki series in its 35th anniversary year, and becomes the ultimate celebration for both fanbases.

IGN: Fans have already noticed some parallels between Tekken and the Baki series: some characters like Feng and Fahkumram got some inspiration from this series, and its main conflict is also about a father and son fight, similar to Tekken. Was Tekken inspired by Baki in any way? What do you make of these parallels between the two properties?

Naoya Yasuda: It is fascinating that fans have picked up on those commonalities and similarities, and as a fan myself I find a lot of it convincing.

The Baki series is without question a monument in the genre of Japanese fighting manga, and it continues to have an enormous influence on every creator who depicts martial arts and the idea of strength. There have been many devoted Baki fans among the successive Tekken development teams over the years, so it is undeniably true that inspiration from Baki — both unconscious and conscious — lives on in our character designs, in how we express techniques, and in the underlying bearing of our fighters.

On the core theme of a “fated battle between father and son,” I certainly feel a powerful spiritual resonance between the Mishima family (Heihachi, Kazuya and Jin) and the Hanma family (Yujiro and Baki). But I don’t think one imitated the other. Rather, I believe that when you set out to depict the extreme drama of hand-to-hand combat, you inevitably arrive at conflict within a bloodline — the oldest, most fundamental and most violent clash of emotion there is for human beings.

Tekken 8 includes many special intros and exchanges staged for when particular characters face each other. What will Yujiro — the “Strongest Creature on Earth” and the ultimate father — say to Tekken 8’s strongest fighters, and what will those exchanges look like? That is something else to look forward to.

Where Baki has pursued the fantasy of the “Strongest Creature on Earth” through the medium of manga, Tekken has pursued the thrill of performing combat with your own hands and overwhelming your opponent through the medium of 3D fighting games. The platforms differ, but both have spent decades chasing the same questions: what is strength, and what is the aesthetic of fighting? Having the two intersect now, on the ideal stage of Tekken 8, feels almost like destiny. I really hope fans throw themselves into every part of this crossover!

IGN: Of course, the reactions to Yujiro’s reveal were extremely animated. Some feel he’s a perfect fit for Tekken, while others think he’s a bit too out there for the game. What do you make of these reactions?

Naoya Yasuda: I am well aware that when it comes to guest characters there are always a range of opinions about the selection, and mixed views about which IP to include. There is no such thing as a character choice that satisfies 100% of players worldwide, and I think it is only natural that some players aren’t keen on the idea of guest characters at all.

At the same time, the scale of the response to this collaboration with the Baki series honestly went well beyond what we had anticipated. We thought we had a firm grasp of how well Tekken and Baki fit together, but when we showed the teaser trailer at Combo Breaker 2026 in Chicago in May, the explosive roar that erupted in the venue — and the excitement that followed across social media and communities worldwide — far surpassed the scale we had imagined.

Seeing the internet overflow with fans’ expectations, theories and free-ranging speculation has, frankly, put enormous pressure on me as a producer and on the development team! [Laughs] With expectations this high, we absolutely cannot make something second-rate that would let fans down — that keeps everyone on the project focused.

Whether people are excited or watching cautiously, all of it reaches us because they take Tekken seriously. We will turn that enormous pressure into the best kind of energy and finish him to a “strongest on earth” level of quality that leaves everyone speechless the moment they touch him. Please look forward to it!

IGN: What is the one thing you’re excited for players to experience when Yujiro releases?

Naoya Yasuda: What I want people to experience the most is the overwhelming sense of presence and immersion that runs through your whole body the instant you take hold of a controller or an arcade stick and move him on screen: “right now, I am directly controlling the ‘Strongest Creature on Earth’ I read about in the manga.”

The heavy feedback of a single strike, the intimidating presence that dominates the very space when he squares off against an opponent, and the sheer aura of overwhelming strength radiating from the screen — we are honing all of it to the absolute limit within the Tekken 8 framework.

For long-time Tekken fans and competitive fighting game players, there is the ultimate mind game of working out how to master this strongest-on-earth character and control him as a competitive tool. And for fans who have loved the Baki manga and anime, there is the ultimate fantasy: a dream held for years, realized interactively exactly as imagined.

The whole development team will keep working without compromise right to the very end so that we can deliver, quite literally, a “Yujiro Hanma experience” that convinces everyone the moment they touch it. Please let your expectations run high!

IGN: Do you have any news on when we will see the next trailer for him, either gameplay or a character render?

Naoya Yasuda: I can’t give you an exact date at this point but, as I mentioned earlier, Season 3 still has Bob in August and Roger Jr. this autumn. The top priority is for fans to take their time and enjoy what those two bring.

So I think the earliest we will be able to show new gameplay footage or visuals — a character render — of Yujiro Hanma will be sometime after autumn, at which point you can clearly hear Roger Jr.’s footsteps approaching.

But please rest assured. Under close supervision with Akita Shoten, everything on the development floor — his stance, his actions, and every asset needed to express the “Strongest Creature on Earth” — is steadily coming together. We are preparing footage with an impact that will leap far past whatever you have imagined or hoped for, so please enjoy the Season 3 timeline and wait for the next update!

IGN: Speaking of renders, there have been a few fan-made ones floating around the internet. What are your opinions on those?

Naoya Yasuda: Of course I am aware of all the fan-made renders, mock-ups, and fan art flying around online — and I have been enjoying checking them out myself! [Laughs]

The fact that fans are imagining “their ideal Yujiro Hanma,” putting in the time to create work of that quality and sharing it, is the clearest possible proof of how much passion they are pouring into this collaboration. Speaking as a creator, I am truly grateful.

That energy — everyone creating “my Tekken Yujiro” and getting excited about it — is the best fuel this collaboration could have. With Roger Jr. joining this autumn as well, we made a point of embracing internet memes and community culture, because more than anything we want to keep valuing that playful spirit and enthusiasm from our players.

That is exactly why I don’t want this huge festival, this big wave around Yujiro Hanma’s arrival, to stay confined to the development side. I want to build it up as far as it can possibly go, together with the fans!

It will be a little longer — sometime after autumn, around when you can hear Roger Jr.’s footsteps — before we can show official gameplay footage and an official render. Were you ever a fan of fighting games, and if so, what is your take on the parallel’s between Baki and Tekken?

Yuki Yokoi: I am not very good at fighting games, but I have played a bit of everything — I put a lot of effort into Tobal No. 1 on the PlayStation, among others.

As for what the two works have in common, I think the smallest unit of it is the father-son fight. More than being the strongest man on earth, or mastering martial arts, what runs through both is something far easier to grasp: the simple, vertical throughline of wanting to beat your own father. That, to my mind, is what they share.

IGN: Of course, the reactions to Yujiro’s reveal were extremely animated. Some feel he’s a perfect fit for Tekken, while others think he’s a bit too out there for the game. What do you make of these reactions?

Yuki Yokoi: First of all, I feel both relieved and elated that something we had been discussing with Bandai Namco for five years has finally come to fruition. In the source material, Yujiro is an overwhelmingly powerful character who has never lost, so as a Baki fan I understand the concerns people have.

I knew that Baki had been spreading overseas through the anime and so on, but seeing so many international fans erupt with something close to sheer euphoria when the announcement went out at Combo Breaker made me genuinely happy — and Itagaki-sensei was delighted as well.

The Tekken development team has also engaged with the Baki series with tremendous sincerity. There were points during supervision where I accepted something as unavoidable given the game’s specifications, only for the team to come back at the next session and say, “On reflection, let’s fix this so it feels more like Yujiro.” With a team like that, I think fans of both works will be able to enjoy a Yujiro they will be genuinely happy to see.

IGN: Working with Bandai Namco to bring Yujiro to Tekken, what is one thing you’re excited for players and fans to experience when he releases?

Yuki Yokoi: Simply being able to play as Yujiro — the experience of everyone getting to become the Strongest Creature on Earth. Please enjoy that. He has rarely been made playable in the past, after all.

IGN: Baki is celebrating its 35th anniversary. How do you feel about the impact this iconic martial arts franchise has had both on its fans and the greater media space?

Yuki Yokoi: I can’t speak to how it is overseas or worldwide, but in Japan people often talk in terms of “before Baki” and “after Baki.” You hear a lot that it changed the way strength is depicted. The world of Baki tends to portray strength through characters with such tremendous presence that you can’t begin to comprehend how they became that strong. I think Baki’s influence on that way of depicting strength has been considerable.

IGN: Baki has had collaborations with several major brands since the Most Evil Death Row Convicts arc aired on Netflix. With the IP celebrating its 35th year, how does it feel to see the IP continued to expand and be celebrated, and what do you make of its success in the years since then?

Yuki Yokoi: Speaking as someone involved with the series, I think the simple truth is that before the 2018 anime adaptation, far too little was being done with it — merchandising included — relative to the scale of the work itself. My feeling is that people have finally found it.

The core fanbase, the original readers, are around my own age, in their forties, and the fact that those people have begun to hold a degree of decision-making authority in their jobs is, I think, one reason these collaborations have increased. You might say Baki fans have started pushing their own selfish wishes through, each in their own arena.

IGN: Lots of manga and anime are getting live-action shows. Is Baki a property that you could see having a live-action adaptation one day?

Yuki Yokoi: I can’t say it will never happen. Itagaki-sensei is cautious about it, but he has never said no outright. That said, looking at past examples that didn’t work out, I think it would only move forward once we could carefully conclude that it wouldn’t disappoint the fans.

IGN: Is there anything you’d like to say to fans of the manga and anime, either about this collaboration, or about the 35th anniversary?

Yuki Yokoi: The 35th anniversary will continue on from here, but for now, this is a collaboration between two works built on the greatest father-son fights of the century. A father who has brought his own family’s feud to a certain conclusion is stepping into the Mishima family’s struggle — please look forward to seeing how that unfolds!

Virginia (she/her) is IGN’s News Editor.
