The Insidious<\/em> franchise has been treating audiences to various thrill rides for over 15 years at this point, and with the Lamberts finally getting closure (literally) in 2023\u2019s The Red Door<\/em>, it\u2019s time for The Further to unleash fresh horror onto a new, unsuspecting family.<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Enter Amelia Eve\u2019s Gemma, a young mother still living in her childhood home and clinging to the trauma that shaped her. She\u2019s raising her daughter Maya (Island Austin), holding down a solid job, and dating a handsome cop (Brandon Perea). Naturally, their fragile peace doesn\u2019t last: it\u2019s soon shattered by a supernatural nightmare bleeding straight out of The Further.<\/p>\n

Director Jacob Chase creates some atmospheric set-pieces that feel tangible in their terror, and delivers the well-crafted jump scares that Insidious<\/em> fans have come to expect. There are definitely moments here that rival the iconic shock of the Lipstick-face Demon from the first film, but there’s more devious dread here too. A pillow\u2011fort sequence is a standout \u2014 all panicked claustrophobia and spooky peeking faces \u2014 and for anyone who suffers from odontophobia, let’s just say that Gemma’s career as a dental hygienist garners plenty of opportunities to set your teeth on edge.<\/p>\n

Sam Spruell\u2019s big bad brings convincing menace, and his three earthbound disciples add decent sideshow creepiness, even if they lean heavily on the tired \u2018old people are gross\u2019 trope. Unfortunately, the clich\u00e9s don\u2019t stop there: Maisie Richardson\u2011Sellers\u2019 Clare is saddled with the lazy \u2018magical negro\u2019 archetype, and is given fairly short shrift, including a baffling heist-planning scene involving a punnet of tattooed grapefruits.<\/p>\n

Still, the performances are solid across the board, and it\u2019s always a pleasure to have Lin Shaye back as Elise \u2013 the franchise\u2019s stalwart paranormal investigator \u2013 now offering guidance from the other side.<\/p>\n

Insidious: Out Of The Further<\/em> doesn\u2019t reinvent the franchise, but when it leans into its eerie set\u2011pieces and fresh family dynamic, it delivers exactly the kind of polished, popcorn\u2011friendly terror that fans come for.<\/p>\n
