The mockumentary comedy follows Isabella, an eccentric 40-something woman living alone at the sprawling Ravenhyde Hall estate, who has tricked inquisitive director Sam (Laurie Kynaston) \u2014 no doubt loosely based on Abrahams\u202f\u2014 into believing that her marooned existence is worthy of documentation as she\u2019s \u201caristocracy\u2019s answer to the Kardashians\u201d.<\/p>\n

Shot like a low-budget fly-on-the-wall documentary,\u202fLady<\/em>\u2019s intriguing blend of mockumentary and surrealism matches the bizarrely engaging chemistry between Kynaston and Clifford, as a young director, vying for a candid study, clashes with a woman desperate to control her narrative. Clifford is particularly potent as Isabella, who in impassioned moments of pseudo-performance art (declaring that she\u2019s the canvas, the paint and the brush) decides to compete in the annual talent show Stately Stars, which she hosts and judges for local children. As Abrahams\u2019 sharp script, co-written with Miranda Campbell Bowling, reveals the reality of Isabella\u2019s life, including dealing with menopause and struggling with grief, she begins to fade away, disappearing figuratively and literally in her gilded cage.<\/p>\n

Jonny Woodley\u2019s intensely haunting, vocally operatic score and Terri Higgins\u2019 costume design (from a bright-azure tartan pantsuit to leopard print layered with a trench coat) add a psychedelic touch. While there are moments where the mockumentary format hiccups with the camera\u2019s questionable positioning, and Clifford\u2019s raucous performance tips into frenzied territory, Abrahams is quick to get the film back on track with moments of deep vulnerability. With shades of\u202fSaltburn<\/em>\u2019s opulent aesthetic and\u202fGrey Gardens<\/em>\u2019 ruminative loneliness,\u202fLady<\/em>\u202fembodies unexpectedly poignant ponderings on the invisibility of middle-aged women and the relationship between artist and muse.<\/p>\n
