Oddly enough, history is replete with stories about being in the belly of a whale. There\u2019s the biblical version with Jonah (see: The Bible, duh) and its reinterpretation in Pinocchio, finding the puppet-boy stranded in the cavernous innards of Monstro. But never before has a cinematic telling truly explored how exactly it would feel to be eaten alive and swallowed down into a whale\u2019s stomach. Until now. Enter Whalefall<\/em>, the wild new survival thriller from director Brian Duffield, which finds Austin Abrams\u2019 diver Jay in deep, deep<\/em> trouble.<\/p>\n

Stuck in a whale\u2019s stomach with only an hour to escape, Jay\u2019s predicament had to feel real \u2013 so Duffield opted for practical effects wherever possible, \u201cto give you that visceral feeling of, \u2018This is really happening to him\u2019,\u201d he tells Empire<\/em>. As an audience member, you should feel it, and hear it too. \u201cThe whale\u2019s heart is beside the stomach, so throughout the movie it is beating and the stomach is reacting to the beats,\u201d says Duffield.<\/p>\n

As if that wasn\u2019t enough, Jay will face more than acid and a dwindling air-supply in the literal belly of the beast. \u201cFor a while, there was a squid puppet in the stomach, too,\u201d says Duffield \u2013 describing the stomach set as \u201ca diva\u201d, for all the issues it posed. \u201cWe would fill it up with water and then drain the water out, and the stomach would assume a completely different shape overnight. All our storyboarding, previs and planning \u2014 none of it worked once we got inside the whale,\u201d he says. \u201cThat was really hard and challenging, and could lead to really dark days.\u201d Even a fake whale\u2019s stomach can be a dangerous place.<\/p>\n
