Who is Vision? It\u2019s a good question. Paul Bettany\u2019s Marvel character has a long and storied history in the MCU, predating even his official Vision debut in Avengers: Age Of Ultron<\/em>, right back to voicing Tony Stark\u2019s JARVIS operating system in Iron Man<\/em>. Since then, he\u2019s been melded with Ultron and the Mind Stone, become an automaton, been killed by Thanos, revived in a fake reality by his lover Wanda, and re-emerged as White Vision back in his original body. No wonder his new series, VisionQuest<\/em>, finds him questioning who he is.<\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n For showrunner Terry Matalas, the series \u2013 ending a trilogy that began with WandaVision<\/em> and Agatha All Along<\/em> \u2013 is the perfect way for Vision to get existential. \u201cThis is the first time where we get to watch Vision drive the narrative, and understand who he is, who he thinks he was,\u201d he tells Empire<\/em>. \u201cWe watch this character go through an identity crisis. It\u2019s kind of the Vision movie, if you will.\u201d Part of that exploration involves Vision reverting into an internal virtual reality, where Ultron, EDITH, DUM-E and U are given human-avatar form. \u201cThey\u2019re there to help him,\u201d Bettany explains. \u201cHe is attempting to move about in the world in a small way, and then at night download this data and discuss the things that have happened to him with these different AIs, who have different characteristics and help him understand different qualities and skills. But he is also very much using it as an excuse to keep the world and himself at arm\u2019s length. And of course, events conspire to drag him actually into the world.\u201d<\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n For Matalas, the show is \u2013 like WandaVision<\/em> and Agatha<\/em> before it \u2013 all about what it means to be a human being. \u201cI think ultimately, what Vision is going through are things that we all go through, and deal with,\u201d he says. \u201cTrauma, dealing with relationships, dealing with how we react to experiencing love or not experiencing that.
