Saoirse Ronan never misses. Right from her early child performances, through to her recent work, she\u2019s proved one of Ireland\u2019s greatest talents \u2013 often playing characters who the audience can root for wholeheartedly, flawed as they may be. See Lady Bird<\/em>, Jo in Little Women<\/em>, Rona in The Outrun<\/em>, or burgeoning detective Constable Stalker in See How They Run<\/em>. But it\u2019s rare to see Ronan go full wrong\u2019un, a mode she\u2019s keen to explore going forward.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to go dark,\u201d she emphatically tells Empire<\/em>. And she wouldn\u2019t mind doing so in one of cinema\u2019s biggest franchises. \u201cI said that I wanted to be a Bond villain and I\u2019m dead serious,\u201d Ronan elaborates. \u201cI think it would be really interesting, having a young female villain. Especially for girls and women, to see someone who can just take all that pent-up anger and direct it somewhere, there\u2019s something interesting in that dramatically. So I would love to do more of that.\u201d<\/p>\n

She is, however, playing someone caught in a devilishly dark predicament in her latest film Bad Apples<\/em> \u2013 as teacher Maria who, through various means, winds up holding captive a particularly disruptive pupil. And once he\u2019s out of her classroom (and locked in her basement instead) her lessons undeniably become a much happier place. \u201cThe whole point, and the reason why the writing is so clever, is that it\u2019s gone past being black and white,\u201d she tells Empire<\/em> of the film. \u201cI don\u2019t know what I would do in that situation, but I certainly don\u2019t feel like Maria is an out-and-out psychopath. I think she\u2019s the nicest villain you could play.\u201d Next stop: all-out Bond nastiness?<\/p>\n
