A new Martin McDonagh movie is always something to relish \u2013 sure to be packed with razor-sharp dialogue, caustic characters, and a melancholy undertone that gets under your skin. And now, after the hit of The Banshees Of Inisherin<\/em>, the filmmaker is back with Wild Horse Nine<\/em>. Re-teaming with old favourites (hello, Three Billboards<\/em>\u2019 Sam Rockwell!) and welcoming new faces into the McDonagh fray (hello, John Malkovich!) it sends two bickering CIA operatives on a mission in the 1970s, with explosive results.<\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n As McDonagh tells Empire<\/em>, the film has something to say about how America conducted itself in the \u201860s and \u201870s. \u201cIt\u2019s definitely my most political thing,\u201d he explains. \u201cI haven\u2019t expressed a political opinion, really, in my films, and this one\u2019s pretty out there.\u201d As Malkovich\u2019s veteran CIA officer Chris and Rockwell\u2019s younger Lee venture to the Chilean territory of Rapa Nui, aka Easter Island (of stone heads fame), it\u2019s clear they\u2019re up to some shady business. \u201cI wanted to analyse the history of the CIA, what they\u2019ve done in the world since the Second World War,\u201d McDonagh says.<\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n It\u2019s a set-up that allows for the classic character dynamic you expect from the man behind In Bruges<\/em> and Banshees<\/em>. During the course of Wild Horse Nine<\/em>, we\u2019ll see \u201ca character starting, for the first time, to be questioning or regretful, or guilty about it…\u201d explains McDonagh. \u201cThat was the gist of what I wanted to talk about. Those covert ops were not necessarily very secretive. I wanted to speak on that, with a character who\u2019s becoming more open and honest as the film goes on.
