At the heart of The Uprising<\/em> is serious business. The 1381 Peasants\u2019 Revolt was no joke; and Andrew Garfield\u2019s central character, an unnamed ploughman, is someone pushed beyond breaking point, having lost his wife and children to the plague, fighting back against the tyrannical Richard II (Woody Norman) when raised taxes threaten to squeeze the life out of him and his fellow working class people. But the latest film from Paul Greengrass looks to be a cinematic ride too \u2013 taking that topic and making it a screen spectacle.<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI think if you watch the film, it\u2019s a rip-roaring adventure, but it\u2019s also got something to say without hitting you over the head,\u201d the filmmaker tells Empire<\/em>, promising a good time at the movies. \u201cI don\u2019t like doing films that are lectures. I want them to be entertaining.\u201d It is also, seemingly, something of a Robin Hood story; while Peasants\u2019 Revolt figure Wat Tyler is here \u2013 played by Cosmo Jarvis \u2013 The Uprising<\/em> is also somewhat inspired by William Langland\u2019s 1377 poem Piers Plowman<\/em>, which represents \u201cthe fevered dreams, hopes, fears, and enragements of a common farmer,\u201d says Greengrass. \u201cIt was also very interesting to me that it is the first moment the character of Robin Hood appears in print\u201d.<\/p>\n

Preparing for his Ploughman role, Garfield watched Robin Hood movies, as well as 2010 horror Black Death<\/em>, and Ridley Scott\u2019s The Last Duel<\/em>. Greengrass is thrilled with what the pair have pulled off together. \u201cIt was a hard, physical, ambitious film to make with limited resources, and I\u2019m very, very proud of what Andrew achieved,\u201d says the director. \u201cIt\u2019s a really outstanding performance.\u201d Here\u2019s hoping the Ploughman hits a bullseye.<\/p>\n
