Ack, ack, ack! In 1996, Tim Burton unleashed one of his most raucous and playful films \u2013 a crazy, colourful sci-fi satire that let marauding Martians loose on (then) modern America to wreak havoc. While the legendary filmmaker is often associated with the macabre and the gothic, Mars Attacks!<\/em> saw Burton indulge his inner pop-artist with an anarchic alien invasion movie whose tongue is lodged firmly in cheek. It\u2019s a film that delivers flying saucers, little green men, ray guns that turn people to green goo \u2013 all accompanied by a Danny Elfman score that heavily features the theremin, the go-to sound for classic science-fiction soundtracks. This is Burton\u2019s loving homage to the schlocky (and often shonky) alien-attack movies of his youth \u2013 like Invaders From Mars<\/em>, Earth Vs. Jack Nicholson\u2019s POTUS, James Dale, is proven to be an incompetent leader, incapable of taking down the extra-terrestrial nasties; legendary actor Rod Steiger hams it up as General Decker, all too happy to go gung-ho at any given opportunity, despite his firepower being entirely ineffective; and Vegas big-shot Art Land (also Nicholson, in a dual role) is so obsessed with his space-themed \u2018Galaxy\u2019 casino that he doesn\u2019t see the invaders coming until it\u2019s too late. Burton skewers all of this with the same ironic view of Americana he deployed in Edward Scissorhands<\/em>\u2019 pastel suburbia.<\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n 30 years on, it\u2019s still a blast to see Burton deliver this kind of summer movie mayhem \u2013 blowing up scale models of global landmarks as the martians descend (goodbye, Big Ben!), turning hapless humans to slime as they run riot in congress, and laying waste to Las Vegas in the third act. The aliens look as great as ever, too \u2013 especially in this brand new 4K transfer from Warner Bros \u00ad\u2013 created by the masterminds at Industrial Light and Magic. While Burton initially wanted stop-motion animation for the martians (in part as tribute to the great Ray Harryhausen), the cutting-edge computer effects courtesy of ILM allowed for them to be as expressive as possible, all the better for channelling Burton\u2019s mischievous humour.<\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n Mars Attacks!<\/em> was both a retro throwback, and ahead of its time too<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n <\/p>\n While the martians are the real stars, Mars Attacks!<\/em> boasts one of the most impressive human ensembles Burton has ever amassed. Beyond double Jack Nicholson, there\u2019s Glenn Close as the First Lady, Marsha; a young Natalie Portman as their daughter Taffy; Pierce Brosnan as scientist Donald Kessler; Sarah Jessica Parker as talk show host Nathalie Lake; Michael J. Fox as her boyfriend Jason; Martin Short as the President\u2019s Press Secretary, Jerry; Annette Bening as Art Land\u2019s wife Barbara; Burton regular Danny DeVito as Galaxy gambler Joe; sports legend Jim Brown as boxer Byron Williams. And that\u2019s not to mention the film\u2019s secret weapon \u2013 a bonkers extended cameo from none other than Tom Jones, whose Vegas stage show is besieged by the cackling creatures.
