\u201cIt\u2019s quite shocking,\u201d says Bella. The 22-year-old film fan, who dressed as Lightning McQueen for her last birthday, is contemplating the notion that Cars<\/em> was not a universally beloved Pixar movie when it first revved up in 2006. It wasn\u2019t reviled. But it was called \u201ca dud\u201d by the BBC<\/em>. \u201cBland and forgettable,\u201d said The Guardian<\/em>. Following that astonishing run \u2013 the first two Toy Story<\/em> films! Monsters, Inc<\/em>! Finding Nemo<\/em>! The Incredibles<\/em>! \u2013 the studio\u2019s seventh feature put a dent in the sparkling Pixar bodywork. Even Empire\u2019s review is a lukewarm three stars: \u201cThis is not Pixar firing on all cylinders,\u201d wrote our Olly Richards.<\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u201cIt actually really does surprise me that other people at Empire<\/em> don\u2019t love it,\u201d continues Bella. It\u2019s true. When I announce that I\u2019m planning an article for Cars<\/em>\u2019 20th anniversary, there is confusion among the Empire<\/em> team. But Bella is far from alone. As Cars<\/em> returns to the big screen this weekend in a 20th anniversary re-release, it does so as a victory lap; the film has become a titanic part of Gen Z culture, a staple part of the Pixar canon that they quite literally grew up on. \u201cAs I’ve got older, it felt like the Cars<\/em> franchise also moved with me,\u201d says Jed, 24. Today, he has a Cars<\/em> sun-shield for his own vehicle, a Rust-eze phone case \u2013 and a brain-load of useless Cars<\/em> facts. \u201cI know that the Japanese car from Cars 2<\/em> was called Shu Todoroki,\u201d he offers. \u201cNo-one’s ever going to ask me that. It’s never going to be useful knowledge.\u201d<\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n ‘Cars<\/em> was one of the first films I remember seeing in the cinema’<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n <\/p>\n For this generation, Cars<\/em> was always there. There was no before Cars<\/em> (BC) or after Cars<\/em> (AC?) in the Pixar roster; it sat alongside the other greats. \u201cCars<\/em> was one of the first films I remember seeing in the cinema,\u201d says Jed, who was 4 at the time. He spent his childhood years playing with Cars<\/em> toys. For Ella, 26, the film is a family affair; she loves it, her mum loves it, her little brother is an all-out Cars<\/em>-head. \u201cHe went through a phase where that was the movie that was on continually, forever, for days,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s one that we all quote at each other a lot. It has that role within my family unit.\u201d<\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n So, what it is that makes Cars<\/em> special? Why does Lightning McQueen run laps around his cartoon competition? It helps that a a bright red anthropomorphic race car voiced with lackadaisical swagger by Owen Wilson is scientifically engineered to be rad. \u201cThe characters are cool,\u201d Jed asserts. \u201cYou’ve got Lightning McQueen, the cocky race car, and Tow Mater, the comic relief. The other side characters in Radiator Springs each bring something different to the film.\u201d This hangout vibe is essential to the film\u2019s charm, agrees Ella. While Ratatouille<\/em> and Up<\/em> are her top two Pixars, \u201cUp<\/em>, especially, is not one that you want to have on all the time,\u201d she says. The good vibes and low stakes of Cars<\/em> make it \u201ca wholehearted comfort watch\u201d.<\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n It is this middle portion of the movie \u2013 in which the lost Lightning McQueen discovers the slow charms of forgotten town Radiator Springs \u2013 that Empire<\/em>\u2019s Olly Richards recalls being most caught out by. He\u2019s a big Pixar fan, but hasn\u2019t revisited Cars<\/em> in the intervening two decades since his review. \u201cIt felt a lot younger in terms of its comedy, which is kind of weird because the story of this guy who\u2019s lost his way and is trying to find his relevance again is really a lot older,\u201d he points out. He\u2019s right about the humour skewing young; all the Cars<\/em> fans I speak to attest to how funny they find the film (\u201c\u2019Fly away, Stanley, be free!\u2019 is a line I think about too frequently,\u201d says Ella).<\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n ‘It really speaks to me, this idea of honing your craft, and honing yourself.’<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n <\/p>\n The middle-aged messaging, meanwhile, can likely be attributed to John Lasseter; Cars<\/em> was his long-gestating passion project, a love-letter to Route 66 and retro Americana, a reminder to slow down and enjoy the smalltown life in a world rapidly upping gears. This sentiment is revealing itself more and more to the Cars<\/em> generation \u2013 notably also the internet and smartphone generation \u2013 as they grow. \u201cLightning McQueen\u2019s relationship with [mentor] Doc Hudson is really special,\u201d says Bella. \u201cIt really speaks to me, this idea of honing your craft, and honing yourself.\u201d She screened the film for her birthday (hence the McQueen costume), surrounded by her nearest and dearest. \u201cIt’s such a testament to friendship as well,\u201d she says. \u201cIt was really nice watching with my friends for that reason.\u201d<\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Cars<\/em> has also successfully hooked in younger viewers to the visual splendour of Radiator Springs\u2019 desert roads and neon lights. \u201cIt’s become something that I refer to in my head, of like why I like certain aesthetics,\u201d says Ella.<\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n For everyone I speak to, Cars<\/em> is constantly cruising in their minds. Jed\u2019s friends \u201cknow me as the Cars<\/em> guy,\u201d he says, as he prepares to see it again in cinemas this weekend, in 4DX. The film sparked an obsession with cinema that\u2019s drawn him to work in the industry. Ella was soothed by the thought of Lightning McQueen during a recent driving test, when she was asked to do an emergency stop at 40mph. \u201cIt takes slightly longer to stop than if you’re coming down from 20,\u201d she recalls. \u201cI remember having the thought, am I going to fail on this? No, it’s fine. In Cars<\/em>, when Lightning McQueen does an emergency stop, it takes him ages.\u201d And Bella is fuelled by the character\u2019s big ambitions. \u201cI joke that I want to be the Lightning McQueen of film criticism,\u201d she laughs. \u201cI want to be the underdog. I want to be the rookie that goes through this transformation.\u201d<\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n ‘I don’t think any other Pixar film has made me feel the way that Cars<\/em> does.’<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n <\/p>\n After speaking to me, Olly Richards decides to finally rewatch Cars<\/em>. All these years later he stands by his three-star review; still confused by the inner logic of the world (\u201cI\u2019d forgotten that they go into male and female gendered toilets,\u201d he notes), still finding the middle hour baggy, still thrilled by the opening and ending. Mater has improved, in his estimation. \u201cI actually found him quite sweet, and fun,\u201d he says. He cannot count himself among the Cars<\/em> generation, though he\u2019s glad they exist. \u201cI\u2019m very pleased that people out there like it a lot more,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Like any film that adults didn\u2019t quite get at the time, and that the younger generation adores, they become more than just films. Cars<\/em> isn\u2019t just Cars<\/em>. It is toys, memories, family relationships. Sequels, too. Cars 2<\/em> is a \u201cbad film,\u201d Bella admits, though they all confess a secret love for it. \u201cI don’t think any other Pixar film has made me feel the way that Cars<\/em> does,\u201d Bella says. As the Cars<\/em> generation continues to grow, the film will forever be there with them. Because, like a wise man once said: life is a highway.
