Two hundred dead.&nbsp;Later on, high-school student Sue Snell (Siena&nbsp;Agudong) says to the authorities, \u201cYou think you know what happened at prom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"inlineImage-module-scss-module__t19_Pa__image-container block-item\" data-test=\"inline-image-container\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Carrie\" loading=\"lazy\" data-nimg=\"fill\" src=\"https:\/\/imdbnews.ir\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/carrie-2026.jpg\" \/><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"content-module-scss-module__RI8h6a__content\" data-test=\"content\"><\/p>\n<p>We all know what happened at prom, right? Stephen King\u2019s debut novel and Brian De Palma\u2019s pyrotechnic adaptation are part of pop culture; even those who \u2018don\u2019t do horror\u2019 are familiar with the sad, scary tale of bullied teen Carietta White and how she unleashes her telekinesis to exact raging revenge on her peers. But anyone who\u2019s followed Mike Flanagan\u2019s career will also know how he likes to take revered texts \u2014 Shirley Jackson\u2019s <em>The Haunting&nbsp;Of&nbsp;Hill House<\/em>, Edgar Allan Poe\u2019s <em>The Fall&nbsp;Of&nbsp;The&nbsp;House&nbsp;Of&nbsp;Usher<\/em> \u2014 and use them as a leaping-off point.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"pullQuote-module-scss-module__tK70Tq__pullquote\" data-test=\"pullquote\">\n<div class=\"pullQuote-module-scss-module__tK70Tq__pullquote__content\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>Summer H. Howell&#8217;s Carrie is impossible not to care for<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"content-module-scss-module__RI8h6a__content\" data-test=\"content\"><\/p>\n<p><em>Carrie<\/em> is the same, with showrunner Flanagan embroidering King\u2019s novel at every twist and turn. The unstoppable momentum and sense of tragic inevitability remain intact, but now there are additionally complicated relationship dynamics, entirely new characters, and supplementary sub-plots.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"content-module-scss-module__RI8h6a__content\" data-test=\"content\"><\/p>\n<p>As Carrie, startling newcomer Summer H. Howell is not the clenched, frightened hero that Sissy Spacek played, but a bright, curious girl made alien by her kindness. Her religious mama Margaret (Samantha Sloyan) is a fiercely loving mother&nbsp;who\u2019s&nbsp;trying to protect her daughter. Chief bully Chris (Alison Thornton) is a (prom) queen bee with a truly vicious sting, but&nbsp;she\u2019s&nbsp;also impossible not to care for as her life implodes and she directs&nbsp;all of&nbsp;her cruel anger at Carrie.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"inlineImage-module-scss-module__t19_Pa__image-container block-item\" data-test=\"inline-image-container\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Carrie\" loading=\"lazy\" data-nimg=\"fill\" src=\"https:\/\/imdbnews.ir\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/carrie-2026-1.jpg\" \/><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"content-module-scss-module__RI8h6a__content\" data-test=\"content\"><\/p>\n<p>Does everything work? The efforts to widen and deepen the story by locating Carrie\u2019s condition within the historical context of gifted women who have been wronged feels a little try-hard, and there\u2019s one particular sub-plot, haunting the edges of the action, that reeks of a set-up for a second season. The prom scene, meanwhile, inevitably falls short of De Palma\u2019s dazzling mix of suspense, giddy&nbsp;emotion&nbsp;and explosive technique.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"content-module-scss-module__RI8h6a__content\" data-test=\"content\"><\/p>\n<p>And yet <em>Carrie<\/em>&nbsp;remains&nbsp;a remarkable triumph, Flanagan transposing King\u2019s classic tale to a modern high school where mass-shooting drills are routine, and where every jibe, assault and barbaric practical \u2018joke\u2019 are captured on camera to be uploaded. \u201cThings are going to change,\u201d mutters Carrie as she harnesses her powers, seeking out vacant lots to levitate objects and make broken-down cars go kaboom, like some trainee superhero. Well, Carrie&nbsp;ain\u2019t&nbsp;kidding. Things do change,&nbsp;frequently&nbsp;and fundamentally, in this resourceful, affecting series.
