The sci-fi blockbuster wouldn\u2019t be what it is today if it wasn\u2019t for Steven Spielberg. But as well as continuing to contribute to the genre \u2013 including with his upcoming alien conspiracy thriller Disclosure Day \u2013 the master filmmaker is keeping an eye on other directors\u2019 works too. Among them, one stands particularly tall: Denis Villeneuve\u2019s Dune<\/em> films. And it sounds like Spielberg will be in line with the rest of us for Part Three<\/em> this December.<\/p>\n

\u201cRecently, I\u2019ve loved the Dune<\/em> movies. They are among my favourite science-fiction movies, not just recently, but of all time. Especially the second film,\u201d he tells Empire<\/em> in a major new interview. \u201cI think [Part Two<\/em>] is the best movie Denis has ever made. I cannot wait to see the third one. I\u2019m sure he\u2019ll show it to me early. I\u2019m such a fan of his.\u201d He likens Villeneuve\u2019s treatment of the Frank Herbert source material to the approach another modern master recently made with a literary adaptation. \u201cI love the [Dune<\/em>] books, and I just think his tribute to the books is like Guillermo [del Toro]\u2019s tribute to Mary Shelley with Frankenstein<\/em>: he honoured Mary Shelley as I think Denis honoured Frank Herbert,\u201d says Spielberg.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not just sci-fi that\u2019s captured the legendary director\u2019s attention; he\u2019s been wowed in the horror arena too. \u201cI haven\u2019t directed a horror film yet, and I\u2019ve always wanted to, and someday I may. But there have been some great horror films out already that satisfy that itch,\u201d he says. Chief among them? The latest work from Zach Cregger. \u201cWhen I see a great horror film like Weapons<\/em>, I don\u2019t have an itch I need to scratch. I see Weapons<\/em>, and it doesn\u2019t make me want to make a horror film that\u2019s as scary or scarier than Weapons<\/em>. It satisfies me so completely, it actually arrests my desire to someday make a really, really scary movie.\u201d Aunt Gladys will be thrilled.<\/p>\n
