Through the years, Spider-Man fans have seen various elements of the wall-crawler make it to the big screen. First came Tobey Maguire\u2019s boy-next-door take on Peter Parker, followed by Andrew Garfield\u2019s cooler kick-flipping version, before the MCU introduced Tom Holland\u2019s decisively teenaged iteration, following the character through high school. (Plus, of course, we\u2019ve had Miles Morales in the Spider-Verse<\/em> films too.) But the arrival of Spider-Man: Brand New Day<\/em> will take Holland\u2019s Parker into a new era: now a fully-fledged Friendly Neighbourhood Spider-Man operating in New York City, isolated from his friends \u2013 and Zendaya\u2019s MJ \u2013 since the world no longer remembers who he is (courtesy of some Doctor Strange sorcery).<\/p>\n

As Marvel boss Kevin Feige explains, it sets the stage for perhaps the most comics-accurate Spidey yet. \u201cIt is the first Spider-Man film that we\u2019ve made in the MCU that is focused on the classic elements of Spider-Man,\u201d Feige tells Empire<\/em> in our world-exclusive Brand New Day issue. \u201cHe\u2019s doing the Spidey thing of living in a rather sad, small apartment, listening to the police scanner and going out and using his great power responsibly.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the absence of his friends \u2013 and following the losses of Aunt May and Tony Stark \u2013 Brand New Day<\/em> sees Peter burying himself in his web-slinging work, while his powers undergo strange transformations. \u201cHe is dedicating his entire existence to his job. That\u2019s the core theme that I find incredibly relatable,\u201d says director Destin Daniel Cretton. \u201cI think most people at certain points in our lives have gone through loss. At least for me, and I think for many people, the result can be: \u2018Screw it. I\u2019m just going to work. I\u2019m going to do nothing else but<\/em> work.\u2019 That\u2019s obviously not the most healthy state.\u201d<\/p>\n

The hope is to get deeper under Peter Parker\u2019s skin than ever before \u2013 \u2013 still with all the thrills fans expect from a big summer Spidey blockbuster. \u201c[Brand New Day<\/em>] is a more internal<\/em> movie,\u201d producer Amy Pascal teases, \u201cand the bigness of it is emotional, not worlds exploding.\u201d Get ready for Spider-Man\u2019s all-new evolution.<\/p>\n
