Did you find Office Romance a little too chaste for your liking? Was last year’s Pillion a little more your speed? Well then hold onto your ball-gags, folks, because the rom-com of your wildest fantasies is on its way. Yes, today Magnolia Pictures dropped the first trailer for Gregg Araki’s rom-com-cum-erotic-thriller (steady on) I Want Your Sex, in which Cooper Hoffman’s (The Long Walk) wide-eyed Elliot plays ‘sexual astronaut’ to Olivia Wilde’s artist/provocateur/dominatrix Erika. Don’t know what a sexual astronaut is? Still, er, choking on the bit about ball-gags? Check out the trailer below and all will become clear:
Cooper Hoffman, playing a cheeky chappie who gets in over his head with an older woman in a movie that’s also peppered with exciting major star cameos? Hello, Licorice Pizza 2.0. Well, not quite — PTA’s ode to the ’70s certainly had far less sex toys and PVC, for starters. Written by Araki alongside his Now Apocalypse co-writer Karley Sciortino, this looks like it could be a bit of a banger (sorry). Part raunchy rom-com, part red-blooded erotic thriller, and simmering with palpable chemistry between a very game Hoffman and Wilde, even from this first trailer, I Want Your Sex looks like an adult comedy that cares equally about being adult and comedic. And the set-up — with Hoffman’s Elliot falling helplessly into the orbit of the dangerous-seeming Erika — just works. What more could you want? Charli XCX? Well she’s there too, actually.
The official synopsis for I Want Your Sex — whose impressive ensemble also includes Johnny Knoxville, Daveed Diggs, Chase Sui Wonders, Mason Gooding, Margaret Cho, and the aforementioned Ms. XCX — reads: “When fresh-faced Elliot (Hoffman) lands an exciting job for renowned artist, icon and provocateur Erika Tracy (Wilde), his fantasies come true as Erika taps him to become her sexual muse. But Elliot soon finds himself out of his depth as Erika takes him on a journey more profound than he ever could have imagined, into a world of sex, obsession, power, betrayal and murder.”
We will be waiting obediently in line at the multiplex — no safe words necessary — when I Want Your Sex hits UK cinemas courtesy of Black Bear on 28 August.
