Audiences love a Steven Spielberg alien movie – and the proof is out there. The blockbuster master returned to the big screen this week with Disclosure Day, his new all-original summer movie, following the efforts of whistleblowers to disclose proof of extra-terrestrial life – and despite having one of the most beloved directors of all time at the helm, and major stars in Emily Blunt and Colin Firth, alongside Josh O’Connor, Eve Hewson, and Colman Domingo, it was unknown quite how the film would fare.
It was a promising opening for Disclosure Day at the box office – the film pulled in over $93 million worldwide, with a $44 million haul from the US (significantly higher than the $35 million estimate). It’s expected to pull past the $100 million mark in the next day. With a $115 million budget, Disclosure Day is well on its way to profitability – and marks an uptick in the legendary filmmaker’s box office fortunes, after The Fabelmans and West Side Story topped out at $45 million and $76 million worldwide, respectively.
It remains to be seen how Disclosure Day will hold up next to competition – not only is Toy Story 5 being unleashed this week, but the ongoing World Cup is sure to be capturing attention around the world. Still, never bet against Spielberg, especially when extra-terrestrials are involved.
