DC Studios Sets Absolute Batman, Joker: Laugh Riot, And Krypto Animated Series

What a week it’s been for DC fans! New Batman: Caped Crusader Season 2 trailer yesterday. New Supergirl movie in cinemas tomorrow. And now, courtesy of the Annecy Animation Festival, we’ve learned that there’s three brand spanking new DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation comic book series heading our way, too. As shared by THR, new cartoon series include an adaptation of Scott Snyder’s fan-favourite Absolute Batman comics, a Clown Prince of Crime centric anime series, and a family friendly show centred around Krypto The Superdog.

Absolute Batman

First up is the aptly titled Absolute Batman, based on the bestselling comics run that reimagined Gotham’s Dark Knight as an Alan Ritchson dwarfing unit of a man with a blue-collar background, one less dead parent to grieve, and a rogues’ gallery filled with pure nightmare fuel versions of all Bats’ greatest nemeses. (Seriously, go look up Absolute Joker — you’ll soon see why this has to be an animated show.) Comics writer Scott Snyder is aboard to showrun the series, with his Absolute collaborator, artist Nick Dragotta, also attached as a producer.

Joker: Laugh Riot

Next up is DC’s first ever anime series, Joker: Laugh Riot. Exec produced by animation veteran Jim Krieg, who most recently lent his talents to the DC Animated Universe’s Watchmen and Crisis On Infinite Earths adaptations, this one — directed by Yasuhuro Aoki — imagines a world where Batman has died and Joker is hunting for his killer. The tantalising synopsis shared at Annecy reads: “When Batman is murdered, the Joker launches a ruthless crusade through Gotham’s underworld to find the killer who took away his greatest adversary. But as his violent quest for answers pushes him closer towards vigilante than villain, Joker is forced to confront the truth that without Batman, he doesn’t know who he is.”

Krypto

And last but by no means least, the goodest superpowered boi in the DC Universe, Krypto The Superdog, is getting his own show (again): Krypto. Hailing from SpongeBob SquarePants animation sage C.H. Greenblatt, the Krypto show sounds like one for all the family to enjoy. Its synopsis reads: “When he’s not hanging out with Superman or Supergirl, Krypto tags along with a gang of misfit criminal wannabes who live down the block, and they soon discover he’s a ball of destructive, lovable energy worse than any of them! As he follows them into misadventures and poorly laid plans, Krypto’s pure nature slowly ends up redeeming them, whether they want it or not.”

So there you have it. We don’t know when Absolute Batman, Joker: Laugh Riot, or Krypto will hit our screens just yet, but all three sound like fascinating projects that will each offer refreshing new angles on the DC Universe. And now we’re going to watch cute Krypto videos for a little while to stave off the memory of Absolute Joker… *shudder*
