When a high profile filmmaker manages to make a new movie in secret, especially in this day and age, you’ve got to respect it. But when a high profile filmmaker manages to make a new Ali G movie in secret, well, you’ve really gotta give it some serious respek. And that’s exactly what Sacha Baron Cohen, the man responsible for West Staines’ finest shell-suit sporting hip-hop interviewer, has done. Yes, per Deadline‘s reporting, Cohen has just wrapped filming on a surprise follow-up to 2002’s Ali G InDaHouse. Booyakasha!
In recent weeks, there have been rumblings and rumours doing the rounds that Cohen would be donning the goatee and wrap-around specs soon, bringing back his iconic rude-boy sketch show creation after over two decades away. At the same time though, three-time Oscar nominee Cohen had seemed to shoot down those whispers while out on the press tour for Netflix comedy Ladies First, throwing fans off the scent. But after the surprise release — and critical as well as commercial success — of the brilliant Borat Subsequent Moviefilm in 2020, a movie released a solid fourteen years after Cohen’s Kazakh reporter had his first big screen adventure, we should’ve known better than to believe one of the 21st century’s great comic provocateurs could resist an opportunity to bring back one of his most beloved, button-pushing characters.
At this point in time, it’s worth noting that Cohen’s own reps have declined to comment on Ali G’s return to da house, and we are currently none the wiser as to who may be in line for the Mr. G treatment this time out. Heck, we don’t even know whether Kellie Bright will be tempted away from Albert Square and Eastenders to reprise her role as Me Julie, or if Martin Freeman will come back to represent the West Staines Massiv once again as Ricky C. Still, given the riotous fun that was Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, the current cultural climate, and just how wild Ali G really was in its heyday, the prospect of the self-proclaimed ‘voice of da yoof’ returning has both our curiosity and our attention. Until we hear more on this one though, which could appear on our screens anytime realistically now that it’s in the can, big up yourself and keep it real, yeah?
