There we were, sippin’ on some gin and juice at Empire HQ, when all of a sudden some fresh music biopic news dropped like it’s hot onto our desk. That news? Well, per Deadline‘s reporting, Universal Pictures’ upcoming Snoop Dogg biopic, Snoop, has officially displaced the studio’s previously slated Summer 2027 ‘Untitled Event Movie’ and is now set to hit cinemas on 6 August, 2027.
Set to be directed by Song Sung Blue and Hustle & Flow helmsman Craig Brewer from a self-penned rewrite of Black Panther co-writer Joe Robert Cole’s original script, Snoop will chronicle Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr.’s rise from selling sweets and delivering newspapers as a kid in Long Beach, California to becoming one of the most successful, instantly recognisable figures in the world of hip-hop. Do Revenge and Outer Banks star Jonathan ‘J.D.’ Daviss is set to play Snoop in the movie, which follows in the footsteps of movies like 8 Mile, Get Rich Or Die Tryin’, Straight Outta Compton, and outside-of-the-box brick-based Pharrell Williams biopic Piece By Piece when it comes to capturing the world of hip-hop, gangsta rap, and beat-making music moguls on film.
“After my brothers got to tell their story with Straight Outta Compton, now it’s my turn,” Snoop Dogg told the crowd at CinemaCon earlier this year, building hype for Snoop. “My director, Craig Brewer, he just showed us how hard it is out here for a pimp from Hustle & Flow. And then last year, he got us all singing ‘Sweet Caroline.’ […] My movie is going to be rated R, I guarantee that. So get your parents’ permission.”
With music biopics continuing to prove all the rage this summer as MJ movie Michael soars past the billion-dollar mark at the global box office, there’s no time like the present for The Doggfather to remind us it’s a Doggy Dogg World and we’re all just living in it.
