Okay, so it’s official: Adam Wingard’s super soldier A24 action movie Onslaught is not a stealth sequel to super soldier not-A24 action movie The Guest after all. It’s just set in the same town, shares the same universe, and also happens to star Dan Stevens. But now that we’ve cleared up those technicalities, we can get back to what really matters… watching the aforementioned Mr Stevens playing a super soldier making Nazi scientist in Wingard’s first non-MonsterVerse outing in yonks. And if the latest trailer for the upcoming actioner is anything to go by, we are in for a bloody treat — literally! Check it out below;
Dan Stevens hive, we up! Here we’re getting the man in a wig, in old-age make-up, doing a perversely camp German accent while playing — as we learned at SDCC — a quite literally boot-licking Nazi scientist. And that’s not all, either. As this latest trailer for Onslaught shows, we really do seem to be in for a proper down-and-dirty, claret-spraying action movie here, the likes of which we haven’t really seen since the the genre’s eighties heyday. With killing machines boasting names like Crybaby, Cockroach, and The Butcher (that last one being a sort of evil Batman-meets-Jason-Voorhees played by MMA fighter Alex Pereira) marauding, Adria Arjona playing a badass former Army sniper on a one-woman mission to protect her young daughter, and the likes of actual Michael Biehn, Reginald VelJohnson, and Rebecca Hall also getting in on the action (literally), the vibes are all perfect for an ultra-violent good time at the movies.
While Onslaught is set to go on, well, an onslaught across American cinemas from 6 September, we don’t have an official release date for the movie in the UK just yet — though we would presume it’ll launch here soon after. Fear not, however, because that only gives us here in Blighty a precious few more days with our red string and pinboard to convince ourselves that Wingard is double-bluffing and this will actually be a proper sequel to The Guest after all. IT COULD HAPPEN!
