As a skirt-suit wearing icon once famously said, “anything you can do to draw attention to your mouth is good.” And in that spirit we say read our lips, dear Empirians: Cher Horowitz is officially making a comeback. 31 years after Amy Heckerling delivered us the greatest teen movie of all time, Clueless, Deadline is reporting that the 90s classic’s long-mooted sequel series has officially found a new home — and a greenlight — at Paramount+. And, what’s more, Alicia Silverstone will be back as everyone’s favourite meddlesome but well-meaning Beverly Hills rich girl.
Hailing from The O.C. creator Josh Schwartz, his O.C. co-writer and Gossip Girl co-creator Stephanie Savage, and Jordan Weiss, Paramount+’s Clueless follow-up — which has been in the works, in various forms, since 2019 — will take the form of an eventised limited series, with Silverstone’s Cher Horowitz once again front and centre. Per a description of the show provided to Deadline, the sequel series picks up 30 years on from Heckerling’s culture-shaping classic, rejoining a Cher who is “successful in business and has mastered motherhood — that is, until her daughter’s high school years, and Cher finds that parenting a teenager makes her feel “clueless” all over again.” There had previously been plans for a Clueless sequel series that would’ve centred around Stacey Dash’s Dionne from the original film, Cher’s best friend, but it remains to be seen whether she — or fellow OG Paul Rudd — will make an appearance here.
This Clueless sequel project is the latest in a current trend for resurrecting beloved millennial franchises in the streaming age, following in the footsteps of the likes of Prime Video’s Legally Blonde prequel Elle, Disney+’s Malcolm In The Middle revival, and — despite its unfortunate, premature demise — Chloé Zhao’s ill-fated Buffy The Vampire Slayer series. With shooting due to get underway on Schwartz, Savage, and Weiss’ show as early as next year out in Los Angeles, here’s hoping we don’t have too long to wait before we get clued in on Clueless‘ return.
