Game Of Thrones fans have eaten well this year. The first half of 2026 gave us A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms, further expanding the timeline of Westeros on screen, followed by a barnstorming third season of House Of The Dragon. And while Season 3 delivered huge moves – with Rhaenyra ascending the throne, several major deaths, and new foes emerging in the ongoing Targaryen Civil War – the finale comes with a pang for fans: it’s going to be another two year wait before we get the fourth and final season.
But, as showrunner Ryan Condal assured Empire – speaking on the Pilot TV podcast – the development process on Season 4 is all on track to bring the Dance Of Dragons to a close. And it’s going to be a full-throttle ride. “The whole season is payoff,” says Condal. “We’re all on schedule, prep starts in the fall. So we’ll go back and start revising the scripts, planning sets, location scouts are already happening over the course of the summer to figure out new places we’re going. And then before you know it, hammers will be swinging and 3.4 million screws will be being put together at Leavesden.”
Beyond pre-production in the later months of 2026, Condal says they plan to begin production itself at the start of the new year. And, in the meantime, Thrones fans will get A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms Season 2 next year while they wait. “We’ll start again filming early 2027, and I’m really looking forward to the Last Dance, as we’re calling it on our side,” he confirms. Expect much more fire, and blood, as the Targaryen family tree tears itself apart. “There will certainly be more dragons, I can guarantee you that,” he promises. Dracarys!
