Be honest: you’re still crying about Coco now, nearly 10 years on. Pixar’s musical fantasy film, set in the Mexican Land Of The Dead, might stake a claim as the studio’s most tear-jerking movie – a certified 10 on the sob-scale thanks to its emotional gut-punches. It is, of course, a colourful and joyous adventure too, sending guitar-playing kiddo Miguel into the great beyond on a family adventure. And following the announcement in 2025 that Coco 2 was coming, the D23 Expo in Anaheim, California saw fresh details – and the first concept art – emerge from the sequel.
First up, the film will bring back Miguel, this time a teenager with a snazzy new haircut (see the image above). And he’ll be returning to the Land Of The Dead once more, because the first film’s dastardly villain – murderous crooner Ernesto de la Cruz – is back too, with Benjamin Bratt returning to voice him. “Remember me?” Bratt asked the D23 audience on stage. “I can’t wait to bring my character back to death,” he said, noting that the character is “back for revenge”. Watch out, Miguel.
There’s still a while to go until Coco 2 makes its way to cinemas – it’s due for release in 2029. That’s just enough time to stockpile industrial amounts of tissues, in case this one also cranks the tear dial way up.
