Legacy sequels and TV show revivals are all the rage these days, aren’t they? Whether it’s Frasier or Fuller House, Picard or Cobra Kai or And Just Like That, telly makers — and viewers — just love a story without an ending. And now we can add Kurt Sutter’s biker gang drama Sons Of Anarchy to the list of shows making a comeback… although unlike the others, this one is coming with a wild meta twist.
Per THR‘s reporting, FX has ordered a ‘meta-thriller’ spin-off, Legends, from Sons Of Anarchy star Charlie Hunnam and Jonathan Groff. The show, a limited series, is set to bring back all the main players from the original show, including Hunnam himself, Ron Perlman, Katey Sagal, Maggie Siff, Mark Boone Junior, Tommy Flanagan, Kim Coates, and Theo Rossi. But here’s the twist: they won’t be playing their motorcycle club members from Sons here — they’ll be playing fictionalised versions of themselves, Galaxy Quest style. The show’s official description reads: “When the cast of Sons of Anarchy reunites at a fan convention after more than a decade, the line between life and art blurs as the fractured brotherhood finds itself up against a real-world threat more dangerous than anything they ever faced in their show.” That’s certainly one way to work around Sons‘ sizeable body count!
“When Charlie brought us this inspired idea, we instantly sparked to his bold and entertaining vision,” said FX Entertainment president Nick Grad in a statement accompanying Legends‘ announcement. “Charlie’s talents are on full display as a writer, performer and executive producer, leading the real-life brotherhood on an adventure that is both a love letter to the series and a fun meta twist on what fans think they know.”
Given Sons Of Anarchy‘s status as one of the greatest TV shows of all time, and just how good its sequel/spin-off show Mayans M.C. wound up being, the prospect of a return to Northern California would be a tantalising one in any form. With a meta new wrinkle being introduced though, consider us fully revved up and ready to see what Hunnam and co have cooking with this one.
