When is a limited series not a limited series? Well, if you look to the likes of Shōgun and Big Little Lies, then the answer is simple: when it’s bagged itself heaps of critical acclaim and a buzzy awards run, of course. And so seems to be the case once more as Variety is reporting that Netflix’s prestige cat and mouse thriller The Beast In Me — whose first outing just helped star Matthew Rhys make history at this year’s Emmys — has been renewed for Season 2 at the streamer. And, what’s more, Claire Danes’ Aggie Wiggs is returning too, presumably to collect more morbid inspiration for her next book.
The first season of The Beast In Me saw Danes’ grieving mother and blocked-up author Aggie drawing dark inspiration for her latest book from new next-door neighbour Nile (Rhys), a real-estate magnate’s son who may or may not have been involved in the mysterious disappearance of his first wife. And while we won’t spoil how Season 1 eventually panned out, sole confirmation of Danes’ return in front of the camera certainly suggests a new story awaits both for her and for us. First season showrunner Howard Gordon is back for Season 2 though, this time sharing his duties with the series’ executive producer Daniel Pearle.
“We always told ourselves we’d only do a second season of ‘The Beast in Me’ if we found a story that was worthy of the first – and I’m thrilled to say we found it,” said Gordon in a state confirming the psychological thriller’s return. “We loved making this show and our audience seemed to love watching it, so we’re enormously grateful to Jinny Howe and Netflix, and to Karey Burke and 20th Television for giving us the chance to get the band back together and do it again.”
At this point, what creator Gabe Rotter has in store for us with The Beast In Me Season 2 very much remains to be seen — plot, cast, release date, the whole kit and caboodle. But after that first outing and its jaw-slackening finale, one thing is for sure: we’ll be seated whenever The Beast In Me is uncaged once again. Watch this space!
