Praise Eywa — Avatar: Fire And Ash has finally got a Disney+ release date! Six whole months since James Cameron spirited us back to the alien world of Pandora for his latest “I can’t believe I’m seeing this with my own actual eyes” blockbuster epic on the big screen, the maestro’s third Avatar movie is officially set to stream on Disney+ — in all its fiery, ashen glory — on 24 June. Yes, in just two weeks’ time! And there’s even a fancy little trailer teasing the threequel’s small-screen debut. Check it out below;
The latest chapter in the Sully family saga — which introduced the villainous Varang (Oona Chaplin), her Mangkwan Clan, and the David Thewlis-led Wind Traders to the Avatar universe — proved another box-office smash when it hit cinemas at Christmas, grossing a dizzying $1.48 billion over the course of its theatrical run. No mean feat, considering Fire And Ash came just three years after The Way Of Water (which had a 13-year build-up driving its mega $2.3 billion worldwide haul), the continuing success of Cameron’s Pandoran project has led the filmmaker to reaffirm in recent weeks his commitment to seeing Avatars 4 and 5 make it to our screens.
Speaking to our very own Empire Podcast just last month about the logistics of executing his five-film saga’s home stretch, Cameron said, “We’re going to be looking at some new technologies to try to do them more efficiently. Because they’re hideously expensive and take a long time. I want to do them [Avatar 4 and 5] in half the time for two-thirds of the cost. That’s my metric. And so it’s going to take us a year or so to figure out how to do that.”
And so, while Jim figures out how to do that — hopefully (fingers crossed) without the assistance of AI — there’s no time like the present to flop like a Tulkun onto the couch and get ready to revisit Pandora once again, now with the added bonus of being able to pause for a pee during that beefy near three-and-a-half-hour-long runtime — and rewind for that trip to Varang’s hut with Quaritch. I see you. Damn right, you do. How romantic?
