It is with great sadness that we bring you the news Kaylee Hottle, child star of Godzilla Vs Kong and Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire, has tragically died at the age of just 18. The young, deaf actor, who announced herself as an exciting new talent — and industry trailblazer — with her performances as Jia Andrews in Adam Wingard’s two most recent MonsterVerse movies, was killed in a car accident on Monday. News of Hottle’s death was first shared by her father Joshua Hottle in an emotional video posted to Facebook, with the Texas School For The Deaf — where Kaylee studied as a child — further confirming the news in a statement on Instagram.
Born in Atlanta, Georgia in 2007 to American Sign Language speaking, hard of hearing parents Ketsi Carlson and Joshua Hottle, Kaylee Hottle caught her first break on-screen before she’d even reached high school. In 2017, Hottle — who had already appeared in several TV ads and projects made in support of and advocacy for the hearing impaired community — starred in a commercial for video relay service Convo. By the end of the following year, the fully fluent ASL speaker had caught the attention of Godzilla Vs Kong casting director Sarah Halley Finn, who just so happened to be on the lookout for a young star to play Jia Andrews, a deaf orphan who shares a very special non-verbal bond with the blockbuster’s outsized simian star.
While the MonsterVerse movies aren’t often remembered first and foremost for the depth and rich inner lives of their human characters, Kaylee Hottle brought real heart and soul to the franchise as Skull Island native Jia. Starring opposite the likes of Rebecca Hall, Alexander Skarsgård, Millie Bobby Brown, and Brian Tyree Henry (the first two of whom learned ASL from Kaylee and her mother, Ketsi, for the film), Hottle brings real emotional depth to the only character in the franchise with a genuine connection to Kong. Through her physicality and the passion of her signing alone, she expresses and explores a kinship with the Titan that grounds the heavily effects-driven spectacle we go to these movies for in something human, tactile, and resonant. It comes as no surprise to read Hottle’s co-star Skarsgård telling Junkee all the way back in 2021 that the young star “steals the movie” in Godzilla Vs Kong — praising her comfortability in front of camera, her receptiveness to directorial notes, and the subtleties of her expressions as an actor.
Having made a one-off appearance in NBC’s Magnum P.I. reboot the same year that Godzilla Vs Kong released, Kaylee Hottle reprised the role of ‘Kong whisperer’ Jia in Adam Wingard’s 2024 Titan team-up offering Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire. A few years older and with her character’s psychic abilities expanded further than before, Hottle once again proves the blockbuster’s beating heart in The New Empire, and landed herself a richly deserved Saturn Award nomination for her work in the movie. Not only does Jia play a pivotal role in the MonsterVerse’s grander narrative here (‘Envoy Of Mothra’ is a pretty damn cool calling card for anyone to have on their CV), but — through her relationships with Kong, her tribal Skull Island roots, and her adoptive mother Andrews (Hall) — she once again gives the franchise palpable emotional beats to play between its bursts of kaiju chaos. It would’ve been so exciting to see what awaited Jia in next summer’s Godzilla x Kong: Supernova.
Speaking to The AU Review while promoting The New Empire, Kaylee Hottle laid out her hopes for what starring in the MonsterVerse movies may be able to do for the community she always held so close to heart and championed her whole life through. “I’m acting in monster movies as a deaf person,” Hottle told the outlet. “I want deaf people to know that they can do that too, just like me. There are no limits.”
In the hours since news passed of Kaylee Hottle’s death, MonsterVerse studio Legendary has taken to X to pay tribute to one of its movies’ true shining lights. “We are devastated by the tragic passing of Kaylee Hottle,” reads the statement on the studio’s socials. “Through her unforgettable portrayal of Jia, Kaylee brought extraordinary heart, humanity, and light to Godzilla, Kong, and the Monsterverse. She was a cherished member of our film family, and her kindness, warmth, and remarkable talent touched everyone fortunate enough to work alongside her. Our hearts are with her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her during this unimaginably difficult time. Rest in Peace, Kaylee.”
While Kaylee Hottle’s life — and what would’ve surely been a long, successful career — have been cruelly cut short, her legacy will live on in the movies that she gave us and the trail that she has blazed for the young deaf actors who will now carry the torch and follow in her footsteps. She will be sorely missed, and the thoughts of Team Empire are with her family, friends, and loved ones at this incredibly difficult time.
