It’s something of a Hollywood tradition – when a new film comes out and breaks all kinds of records, the previous record-holders pass the baton courtesy of a custom piece of art. For instance, James Cameron congratulated the team behind Avengers: Endgame on its Earth-shattering box office haul with an Iron Man / Avatar crossover image; and now, the Russo Brothers are nodding to another Marvel victor.
While Spider-Man: Brand New Day has a good way to go before becoming the most successful film of all time, it did just have the highest-grossing opening weekend ever in the US, earning $360 million in a matter of days – just edging ahead of Endgame’s $357 million US debut. And so, the Endgame directors shared a congratulatory piece of art – by Bosslogic – on Instagram, depicting Spider-Man donning the Infinity Stones as rings. “Huge congratulations to Destin, Tom, Zendaya, Jacob, Jon, Mark, Sadie, Florence, Michael, Marisa, producers Kevin, Amy, Avi, and Rachel, and the entire Spider-Man: Brand New Day cast and crew on making domestic box office opening weekend history,” the filmmakers wrote. “The gauntlet has been passed…”
It remains to be seen what happens from here – having already crossed $1 billion in less than a week of release, can Spider-Man: Brand New Day muscle in with Endgame and the Avatar movies among the all-time global high grossers? And will the Spidey team be handing the crown back to the Russo Brothers once their upcoming Avengers: Doomsday lands in December? Your move, Spider-Man.
