Somehow, it’s been almost a whole year now since we learned that Alien: Earth and Fargo creator Noah Hawley would be tackling a TV take on Ubisoft’s first-person shooter franchise Far Cry at FX. And while co-creator Rob Mac’s casting in the lead role alongside Lizzy Caplan and Steve Buscemi has been public knowledge for some time now, further news on Hawley’s ambitious new anthology streaming series has been pretty thin on the ground. Until now. Per Variety‘s reporting, a whole host of heavyweight talent has just joined the show’s first season — including Brendan Gleeson, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Hamish Linklater.
Further additions to the line-up for Far Cry — which seems to be Disney+’s effort to get in on the prestige video game adaptation action after the successes of HBO’s The Last Of Us, Prime Video’s Fallout, and Netflix’s Arcane among others — include Hawley’s Alien: Earth actor Sam Spruell and Stath Lets Flats British comedy star Jamie Demetriou. Plot and character details for the series remain firmly under wraps right now, beyond its anthological format (there’ll be a new setting and ensemble each season, Fargo style), but if the games are anything to go by then we can reasonably expect the show to land its stars in a different survival scenario in different historical/cultural settings with each new instalment. In the games, that has previously entailed anything from fighting pirates on a tropical archipelago (Far Cry 3), tangoing with Doomsday cultists in present-day Montana (Far Cry 5), or tackling a fascistic Giancarlo Esposito in not-Cuba (Far Cry 6).
We don’t know when Far Cry is due to hit our screens just yet, but we do know shooting on the series has just gotten underway in Spain, so hopefully that means we’ll be hearing a lot more about this one in the days, weeks, and months to come. Watch this space!
