Per Variety‘s reporting, during an appearance at the Zurich Film Festival, Boyle — in attendance to present his upcoming Rupert Murdoch movie Ink — gave a promising update on 28 Y3ars Later (as nobody is calling it.) “28 Years 3, or whatever it ends up being called, will get made because people keep asking about it,” Boyle, who has been planning to direct the trilogy’s closing chapter himself, told the crowd in Zurich. “Quite when I’m not sure, but there’s a script – a very good script by Alex Garland.” Continuing, the Bury-born filmmaker also confirmed that fans of the horror saga can expect more of Cillian Murphy’s Jim, only briefly glimpsed at the end of The Bone Temple, in Part 3. “[It will have] a lot of Cillian Murphy in it,” said Boyle, before quipping, “whether he’ll take his kit off anymore, that I don’t know. He’s got the Oscar now.”
Whether or not the 28… franchise’s Rage-infected folk are technically undead brain-munchers or not, the horror series’ latest two chapters have both immediately marked themselves out as being among the best zombie movies out there. If and when 28 Years Later‘s third instalment hits our screens (and yes, there is still a smidge of an ‘if’ in the mix despite Boyle’s assurances), we could well be looking at one of the great movie trilogies of modern times. Now we just have to hope the apocalypse doesn’t catch up with us in real life before we can catch back up with it in the cinema, eh? *Chuckles nervously*
