“After careful consideration, we have made the decision to postpone The Savant. We appreciate your understanding and look forward to releasing the series at a future date.” It’s been almost a year exactly since Apple TV released this statement, putting the stopper on its buzzy, Jessica Chastain led thriller series following the assassination of Charlie Kirk and amid a political landscape skewing decidedly more Andor than The West Wing. Now, at long last, Deadline is reporting that the streamer has finally confirmed plans to release The Savant in 2027, with a prospective Spring drop coming just in time for Emmys consideration.
Created by Melissa James Gibson and inspired by a 2019 Cosmopolitan article entitled ‘Is It Possible To Stop A Mass Shooting Before It Happens?’, The Savant stars Jessica Chastain as Jodi Goodwin, an undercover investigator with the Anti-Hate Alliance who infiltrates online hate groups in a bid to prevent acts of domestic terrorism before attacks are carried out. The series offers a dramatised take on the work of the real-life investigator from Andrea Stanley’s Cosmopolitan piece, a mysterious and maverick figure known only as — you guessed it! — The Savant.
Given the series’ focus on domestic extremism, inclusion of some potentially triggering imagery involving sniper attacks, and depiction of the far-right, it was deemed inappropriate for release last September, much to star Chastain’s chagrin. Taking to Instagram at the time, the Oscar-winner wrote: “I want to say how much I value my partnership with Apple. They’ve been incredible collaborators and I deeply respect their team. That said, I wanted to reach out and let you know that we’re not aligned on the decision to pause the release of The Savant. […] I’ve never shied away from difficult subjects, and while I wish this show wasn’t so relevant, unfortunately it is. The Savant is about the heroes who work every day to stop violence before it happens, and honoring their courage feels more urgent than ever. While I respect Apple’s decision to pause the release for now, I remain hopeful the show will reach audiences soon.”
For a time, there was perhaps a sense that The Savant was destined to go to the great streaming sanctuary in the sky. But now we have confirmation that Melissa James Gibson and her collaborators’ work will reach our screens next year — and, it certainly feels, not a moment too soon.
